The Wattkopftunnel is a 1950 m long road tunnel through the Wattkopf mountain in the district of Karlsruhe , which was built from 1988 to 1994 as a bypass to the east of Ettlingen . It connects Karlsruhe with the Alb valley and is part of the national road 562.

In 2004, the tunnel was rated as the most unsafe road tunnel in Germany due to the lack of escape tunnels and no separate directional lanes.

Renovation and renovation

From November 2006 to the end of July 2007, the Wattkopf tunnel was closed for renovation work, which is considered the first phase of the safety retrofitting as a reaction to the poor performance in the ADAC safety test. Since August 1, 2007, the Wattkopf tunnel has been freely accessible again. The renovation work included, among other things, completely redesigned communication systems, better monitoring of air cloudiness and a completely redesigned ventilation concept. In a second phase of the safety measures, a 1500 m long escape tunnel was built. The escape gallery was connected to the tunnel tube via cross connections every 280 meters.
