The Tunnel King Berge is 3281 m long one of the ten longest road tunnel in Germany . It crosses the Königshain mountains that give it its name .

As part of the motorway 4 , near Görlitz between the connection points low Seifersdorf (92) and Kodersdorf lying (93), it passes under the conservation area Königshainer mountains. The structure was erected as part of the expansion and new construction of the federal motorway 4 ( German Unity Transport Project No. 15 ). Construction began in 1996. Commissioning followed three years later. The total cost of the tunnel was around 80 million euros.

construction

The tubes have a length of 3279 m and 3281 m respectively. There is a gradient of around 0.5% from both sides towards the center of the tunnel. The portals are at a height of about 192  m above sea level. NN . The center distance between the tubes is around 25 m, with a maximum overlap of 50 m. Each tube has a clearance height of 4.5 m and a clearance width of 9.5 m, which is divided into two 3.5 m wide lanes, edge strips of 0.25 m and emergency walkways on both sides of 1.0 m wide. In both tubes there are four 40 m long breakdown bays at a distance of 642 m. The directional lanes are connected to each other by nine passable connecting tunnels at intervals of 321 m. 24  jet fans ventilate each tube lengthways.

The tunnel was built in the granite using blasting and shotcrete lining using the new Austrian tunneling method . The tubes were driven in parallel from both portals. The standard cross-sectional area is 80.5 m² and there were 570,000 m³ of excavated material.

safety

Among other things, there are emergency call niches every 165 m , when the traffic lights in the tunnel are switched to yellow, a general no-overtaking ban and speed limit of 60 km / h are displayed. Transports of dangerous goods are allowed to cross the tunnel.

Tunnel fire and line closure

On Pentecost Sunday 2013, a truck burned out in the southern tube (eastward lane). Due to the fire, the tunnel tube had to be rehabilitated at this point, the eastward traffic of approx. 30,000 vehicles daily was diverted over several routes during this time, in some cases over a large area. The renovation was completed in mid-October 2013. The cost was around two million euros. The cost of rehabilitation of the diversion routes, which are not designed for the volume of traffic and which in some cases suffered considerable damage from heavy traffic, amounted to a further six million euros. A fatal traffic accident occurred outside the tunnel during the rescue work. When an articulated lorry hit the end of the traffic jam with virtually no brakes, a man died and seven people were injured, some seriously.
