The Wambel tunnel in Dortmund was built from 1988 to 1991 . It is part of the federal highway 236 and runs under the Dortmund district of Wambel . The B 236 is built like a motorway between Lünen in the north and the southern end of the Berghofen tunnel in Berghofer Mark and offers a fast connection to the A1 and A2 motorways and via the directly connected B1 to the A40 and A44 motorways .

The Wambeler Tunnel was designed by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe and the Gelsenkirchen Road Construction Office and planned by the Thormählen & Peuckert engineering office . Its total length is 1,420 meters and the total width is 27 meters. 73,000 m³ of concrete were built and the excavated soil was around 500,000 m³. The total costs were put at 59 million DM . The tunnel's safety equipment was brought up to the current state of the art from September 2012 to February 2015 for 8.2 million euros. The lighting and ventilation system, the traffic engineering tunnel equipment, the video surveillance, the loudspeaker system and the extinguishing water supply were revised.

ADAC tunnel test

In the ADAC tunnel test in May 2006, the Wambel tunnel received a grade of sufficient . Since then, the tunnel's safety technology has been extensively revised. The grades in detail:

  • Tunnel system (route, tunnel width, number of tubes) - grade: very good
  • Lighting and energy supply (emergency power supply, energy supply) - grade: very good
  • Traffic and traffic monitoring (traffic jam detection, video monitoring) - Note: Poor
  • Communication (loudspeaker, tunnel radio) - grade: good
  • Escape and rescue routes (emergency exits, external access for rescue workers) - grade: very good
  • Fire protection (fire extinguishers, fire alarm systems, access routes, water supply) - grade: very good
  • Ventilation (fire programs, temperature resistance of the ventilation system) - Note: Sufficient
  • Emergency management (alarm and deployment plans, emergency exercises, maintenance) - Note: Poor
  • Overall rating: sufficient
