The Berghofen Tunnel is a tunnel structure in Dortmund that was opened to traffic on July 14, 2008 after a six-year construction period.

With a length of 1310 m it serves to extend the federal highway 236 in the direction of Schwerte and to connect the traffic to the federal freeway 1 . The aim is to reduce through traffic through the Berghofen district of Dortmund . It offers a high-performance connection from A1 and B1 to A2 through the eastern part of Dortmund for around 40,000 vehicles a day .

The tubes were built using both mining (671 m) and open construction with subsequent covering. Built according to the latest tunnel safety guidelines, extensive measuring devices ensure an adapted control of the 16 fans, 10 cross connections between the two tunnel tubes enable a quick escape in an emergency, two cross connections are also large enough for rescue vehicles. In an emergency, signs and fire emergency lights help drivers to quickly exit the tunnel using the escape routes. In addition, 46 partially swiveling cameras were installed in the tunnel, which, like the operating technology, are monitored day and night by the tunnel control center in Hamm. There are emergency booths and extraction points for extinguishing water at a distance of 160 meters.

The namesake of the tunnel and tunnel sponsor is the Dortmund member of the Bundestag Ulla Burchardt . That is why the name “Ulla-Tunnel” is circulating in the vernacular and in the local press.

The opening of the structure was celebrated on July 12th and 13th, 2008 with a party at the north-west portal of the tunnel. a. Federal Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee , State Transport Minister Oliver Wittke and the tunnel godmother appeared as guests.

The cost of the tunnel was 63 million euros.
