The airport tunnel is a 4210 m long railway tunnel on the Cologne airport loop . It passes under Cologne / Bonn Airport and therefore bears his name.

course

The airport train station is roughly in the middle of the tunnel.

The structure passes under the Wahner Heide nature reserve and the airport grounds. In the area of the south portal, the federal highway 59 will be driven under. The 420 m long Cologne / Bonn airport train station is roughly in the middle of the tunnel . The two-track airport tunnel will be widened to four tracks on both sides at the transition to the train station.

The north portal of the tunnel is on the Grengeler Mauspfad .

The tunnel accommodates two tracks that can be driven on in the portal area at 130 km / h and in the central section (station area) at 80 km / h.

history

planning

The route planned in the planning status from the beginning of 1992 envisaged the north portal near the northernmost point of the loop, in an arc of 475 m curve radius - the smallest of the entire airport loop. At the airport train station there was an arc of 800 m radius, followed by an opposite arc of 1200 m with the south portal.

According to the planning status from the end of 1995, the tunnel was planned to be 3331 m long. In 1996 the tunnel was extended by a further 900 m at an estimated additional cost of 30 million DM. The Wahner Heide nature reserve was thus crossed completely underground.

The documents for the plan approval procedure were submitted in 1996. The planning approval decision was issued in the first half of 1998. In 1999 the planned length was 4210 m.

construction

The structure was built entirely using the open construction method. A frame construction was used in large parts . In some places, a cover construction method was used due to the low overlap and close development .

In September 2001, two sections north and south of the station, with a total length of 3350 m, were under construction.

During the construction phase, a lane on the 59 federal highway threatened to sink and was temporarily closed.

Installation

The structure has been used by S-Bahn, regional and ICE trains since June 12, 2004.
