The Ruhrschnellweg tunnel is a two-tube, 1005 meter long motorway tunnel on federal motorway 40 in the southern district of the city of Essen below Kruppstrasse.

The tunnel

An average of 83,400 vehicles pass through the tunnel between the Holsterhausen and Essen-Zentrum junctions every day (according to the 2010 road traffic census). Each tube has two lanes and one hard shoulder. In addition to the tubes for the carriageways, there is a supply tunnel in each direction of travel.

The west portal of the Ruhrschnellweg tunnel also serves to accommodate the U18 light rail line coming from Mülheim an der Ruhr and running between the lanes from the Heißen Kirche stop , which continues underground from here.

history

In today's eastern area of the tunnel, at the Freiheit , the cemetery at Kettwiger Tor was located until the first work on the planned Ruhr Schnellweg tunnel in 1955 . It had to be abandoned due to the extensive reorganization of the city in this area and in particular the construction of the tunnel. Many of the graves of Essen personalities that were once located here had to be moved to other cemeteries, mostly to the East Cemetery . A new area was laid out in the Bredeney cemetery for the tombs of the members of the Krupp industrial family .

In September 1970, the Ruhrschnellweg tunnel for the traffic connection known at the time as Bundesstraße 1 was completed and inaugurated on September 25th by the then Federal President Gustav Heinemann . On January 1, 1977 the federal highway was rededicated to the federal highway 430 . On May 28 of the same year, the Essen Hauptbahnhof underground station was opened under the Ruhrschnellweg tunnel, running in a north-south direction . In April 1992, as part of the reorganization of the motorway network in Germany, the A430 was combined with parts of the previous A2 ( Straelen - Kaiserberg motorway junction ) to form the A40 in order to avoid the double routing of the A2 and A3 between the Kaiserberg and Oberhausen crosses . This also emphasized the importance. Since then, the section through the Ruhr Expressway Tunnel has also been called A40.

In 2005, the ADAC repeatedly classified the tunnel as defective in a safety check. During the autumn vacation 2008, the tunnel walls and ceilings were renovated and the ventilation shafts cleaned. The cost was around 600,000 euros.

Comprehensive renovation work took place in 2012. In the period from July 6 to September 30, 2012 , the entire A40 between the Essen-Huttrop and Essen-Zentrum (West) junctions was closed for this, but especially for the renovation of the neighboring Helbingbrücke . The main investments were made in the safety of the tunnel. Seven old cameras were replaced by 53 new surveillance cameras, as well as new lane lighting, fire emergency lighting, new escape route markings and illuminated escape doors. In addition to the modernization of the 19 emergency call stations in the tunnel, there was also the installation of a loudspeaker system, new extinguishing technology and a new fire alarm system.
