The Nollinger Berg tunnel is a 1268 meter long road tunnel and forms a section of the A 861 . On average, 20,000 vehicles pass through the tunnel every day, around 12% of which are trucks. The construction costs of the tunnel amounted to 30.6 million euros.
The tunnel, which runs in north-south direction, leads through the mountain of the same name in Nollingen , a district of Rheinfelden (Baden) , and overcomes a gradient of 3.85% from south to north. The tunnel consists of an east and a west tube, which run parallel to each other at a distance of 30 meters. The tunnel tubes run at a slight cross slope of 3%. Due to different geological and hydrological conditions, the mining drive was carried out based on the so-called New Austrian Tunneling Method as a mixed excavator and blasting drive. The tunnel was built as a joint venture between many companies; The construction company Max Bögl from Bavaria was in charge .
Originally, the tunnel was supposed to consist only of the eastern tube, which was completed on December 16, 2002. Due to the serious fire accidents in the Gotthard , Mont-Blanc and Tauern tunnels , it was decided to build a second tube for oncoming traffic in order to minimize the risk of accidents. The west tube was completed in summer 2005. The operational and safety equipment makes the tunnel one of the most modern and safest in Germany. The ADAC awarded the tunnel the rating “very good”.
