List of tunnel stations

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of tunnel stations contains a list of tunnel stations by country.

German-speaking countries

In all major urban regions in German-speaking countries there are S-Bahn systems, many of which have tunnel stations. Most airport train stations are in the tunnel under or next to the terminal building. There are major metropolitan main stations with station sections in tunnels for regional and long-distance traffic in Berlin , Zurich , Vienna (a few long-distance trains stop in the underground traffic station) and (under construction) in Stuttgart .

Germany

In Germany, it was planned to convert some large terminal stations, such as those in Munich , Frankfurt am Main or Stuttgart, into continuous tunnel stations (so-called Munich 21 , Frankfurt 21 and Stuttgart 21 concept ). Due to the enormous costs, some of these plans were severely restricted or dropped. A tunnel station with 8 tracks for local and long-distance traffic is only being built in Stuttgart. In contrast, numerous tunnels were built for regional and urban traffic.

For rail operations in tunnels with stations there are different regulations from the EBO , for which there are no uniform special regulations. For the direct current S-Bahn networks in Berlin and Hamburg , guideline 464 of the Deutsche Bahn describes the operational sequence of the entire S-Bahn traffic. The alternating current S-Bahn are designed as full-fledged railways, the operational sequence being defined in guideline 408 , in which the operational sequence for other types of train is specified. In addition to this guideline, there are individual regulations for entry into the individual tunnels , which for example limit the entry permit to certain types of vehicle, specify a speed limit and regulate safety aspects. In individual cases, a vehicle distance within sight is permitted on tunnel routes, which is not permitted on conventional railway routes outside of train station areas.

In addition to the tunnel stations in the following list - including the two already completed but not yet operational S-Bahn stations at Berlin Central Station and Frankfurt Ostbahnhof - four more are currently being planned: three stations on the second main line of the Munich S-Bahn and one at the Gateway Gardens at Frankfurt Airport .

Switzerland

In addition to the SBB state railway, there are numerous other private railway companies in Switzerland , some of which operate quite long distances on their own routes. Many of these non-SBB railways are meter-gauge , some are operated by trams and look more like an interurban tram than a railway .

The most unusual railroad in the following list is the Jungfrau Railway , one running in the interior of the high mountain cog railway for over 3400 m high Jungfraujoch . It has two intermediate stations in the middle of the mountain that have no exits, but rather serve as a vantage point over the impressive glacier landscape.

Rest of Europe

In some European countries, there is S-Bahn-like traffic in large cities and metropolitan areas , which runs in sections in tunnels. The reason for the construction of tunnels is often that terminal stations are too far away from the city centers and an extension of local traffic beyond the terminal station can relieve the local bus and light rail networks. A tunnel was opened in Milan in 2006 to connect two terminal stations and, with the help of the existing tunnel stations, to create a convenient transition to the subway . Such a through tunnel is called Passante in Italy and is planned in a similar way in four other cities. In Rome there are several railway tunnels in the outskirts, on which a dense S-Bahn traffic is handled, which acts there as a supplement to the subway. In Madrid , the S-Bahn tunnel connects two terminal stations. In other cities and in mountainous regions there are railway tunnels in which underground stations have been installed. In Spain , lowered railway lines were subsequently tunnelled in some cities in order to remove rail traffic from the cityscape and to make the free areas usable for other purposes.

Belgium

In Belgium there is as yet no train system in the sense of the German states in the region Brussels is such currently in development.

The most important tunnel projects for regional and long-distance rail traffic were the inner-city connecting railways in Brussels in 1954 and Antwerp in 2007.

Monaco

Netherlands

In the Netherlands there is no explicit S-Bahn network for individual city regions or metropolitan areas. The NS Sprinter train type for local traffic is more like a nationwide S-Bahn network (sometimes with very fast cycle times) than a regional train . The NS Intercity corresponds most closely to a German or Austrian regional express . Long-distance traffic in the classic sense is practically only available on routes leading abroad.

Because of the very high groundwater level in many parts of the country , tunnel construction is particularly difficult and expensive in the Netherlands and tunnel stations are therefore rare. Even the two metro networks in Amsterdam and Rotterdam consist predominantly of elevated railway lines and only have a few tunnel stations in the narrowest city center.
