The Paris - Le Pecq line was commissioned in 1837 as the first section of the Paris line. It was the Île-de-France's first railway line. The 2.5 km extension to Saint-Germain-en-Laye was another ten years in the making. The problem was that Saint-Germain-en-Laye is on a terrace above the Seine and after crossing the Seine a 35 ‰ ramp was necessary to overcome the difference in height. The locomotives available at that time were not powerful enough to cope with such inclines. It was not until the 1840s that atmospheric railways became available for these purposes . The construction of such a facility was approved in the summer of 1844 and on October 14, 1847 the station was put into operation.

In 1858 there was an accident on the steep stretch with three fatalities and more than 20 injuries. In 1860 it was switched to steam operation, with the trains - in addition to the locomotive - being pushed by a second locomotive in the first few years.

The line was electrified between 1924 and 1927, reaching Saint-Germain in March 1927. Power was supplied via a busbar to which 750 V direct voltage was applied.

With a view to the planned integration into the RER A line, the Nanterre-Université - Saint-Germain section was equipped with overhead contact lines - with a direct voltage of 1,500 V - from October 1972.

With effect from October 1, 1972, the Nanterre-Université - Saint-Germain-en-Laye section was transferred from the SNCF to the RATP and has been part of the RER line A since then . Saint-Germain is the terminus of the A1 branch.

Renovations in the 21st century

  • Station forecourt (2009–2011): To improve passenger safety and to stabilize the flow of traffic, the above-ground area around the entrances to the station was extensively renovated. The costs for this amounted to approx. 5.6 million euros. The measures included a. a widening of the sidewalks, improvement of the cycle paths, creation of a secure bicycle storage hall with 280 parking spaces, taxi stand with telephone column, relocation of the bus station closer to the train station; Secure bus stops (barriers to the street), short-term car parking spaces for getting in and out, improving lighting and signposting ...
