Patrick Weissinger

Patrick Weissinger (born April 2, 1973 in Stuttgart ) is a German water polo coach and former player. From June 2015 to August 2016 he was the coach of the German national team .

Career

Weissinger played for his hometown club SSV Esslingen until 1994 , then for ten years with Wasserfreunden Spandau 04 , with whom he won ten German championships and eight cup wins. From 1998 to 2004 he was active spokesman at DOSB for the water polo division in DSV , and from 2000 to 2004 he was captain of the national team, for which he played 279 international matches. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he reached fifth place with the German team. He also took part in five world and five European championship tournaments. In the 2004/05 season he was active in Australia as a coach and player with the Cronulla Sharks, while he was active at the Goethe Institute. He then played one more season at SSV Esslingen and rose with him to the German Water Polo League .

From 2005 to 2008 Weissinger completed a diploma training course at the Cologne Trainer Academy . Since 2005 he has worked as a trainer at the federal base in Stuttgart. At the same time he was a coach at SSV Esslingen from 2006 to 2010, with whom he reached two third places in the German championship and was once vice cup winner. He then looked after the club's youth teams - with the U19 and U13 he was German champion - and was the national youth coach. In June 2015 he became national coach. The team lost the first game under his direction on July 3, 2015 at the four-nation tournament in Portugalete (Spain) against Russia 7:12. The team finished eleventh at the 2016 European Championships , and in April 2016 they narrowly missed the Olympic qualification with a 7-8 defeat in the decisive game against Hungary.

Weissinger did not extend his contract, which ran until August 2016. As he said goodbye, he analyzed: “We were at a low point four years ago and are now even deeper. We missed being internationally competitive in terms of training and the promotion of young talent. "

Patrick Weissinger is married and has two children.
