Schuman-Josaphat tunnel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tunnel thus fits into the existing rail network

The double-track Schuman-Josaphat tunnel connects the Schuman and Meiser stations over a length of 1.25 km . The tunnel is an important element of the modernization of the Brussels suburban train system, which is marketed under the Brussels S-Bahn .

This shortens the travel time from the Europaviertel to Zaventem Airport from 30 minutes to less than 15 minutes and relieves the north-south main railway line . The opening took place on April 4, 2016.

The project started in June 2008 and was originally supposed to be completed with commissioning in December 2015. According to the client, Infrabel, commissioning should be delayed to April 9, 2016 due to the current “ general security situation ”. The tunnel was finally opened on April 4, 2016.

The tunnel begins in the Rue Archimede / Archimedesstraat and runs under the Avenue de Cortenbergh / Kortenberglaan, the Rue Stevin / Stevinstraat and under the existing Belliard tunnel. The route then runs over the Place de Jamblinne de Meux / Jamblinne de Meuxplein to avenue Eugène Plasky / Eugène Plaskylaan and avenue Émile Max / Émile Maxlaan, where the new tunnel is connected to the existing underground railway line.

A working group consisting of 60% companies from the Dutch BAM group (Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, Galère, CEI-De Meyer) and 40% companies not belonging to the BAM group (Jan De Nul, Franki Geoconsult), has received the order to build this rail link. The project with a total volume of more than 200 million euros also includes the adaptation of Schuman train station. Since the tunnel runs through a residential area and begins at the EU institutions, efforts were made to keep the loads from the construction site low, so that a large part of the construction work was carried out underground.

Part of the tunnel was excavated directly under an existing car tunnel. The driving level of the car tunnel is used as a temporary roof structure for the railway tunnel.
