The Spanish state railway RENFE operates three S-Bahn lines in Bilbao ( called Cercanías in Spain ), all of which begin at Abando Central Station . Lines C1 and C2 run from here in a tunnel through the city center. The route runs north along the Nervión River . In the suburb of Desierto-Barakaldo the lines fork. Line C1 runs via Portugalete to Santurtzi, which is a route that mostly runs through towns with a subway connection. The parallel traffic is justified by the high number of passengers. Line C2 branches off in Desierto-Barakaldo towards the northeast and ends in Muskiz. The third line, C3, also runs along the Nervión River, but in the opposite direction, where it ends in Orduña . The vehicles used are railcars of the Spanish class 446 .

In addition to the state railway RENFE, the narrow-gauge railway companies FEVE and EuskoTren operate S-Bahn lines in Bilbao. The train company FEVE operates two lines, starting at Concordia station with the destinations Balmaseda and Carranza . The trains go to suburbs to the west and use a common route to Aranguren . The terminus in Bilbao is next to Abando Central Station , although plans are being made to move the route underground in the city center. The Basque State Railways EuskoTren operate three lines on two different routes, all of which end on the eastern side of the Nervión River . A line begins in the eastern city center at Deusto station and then runs underground through the eastern city center. It continues east and ends in Lezama. The other two lines start in the southeast of downtown. One of the two lines ends in the suburb of Bermeo , while the other connects Bilbao with San Sebastian .
