Viaduct route at Jerez

The S-Bahn network of the Cercanías Cádiz is operated by the Spanish state railway Renfe and consists of two lines. A main line connects the two cities of Cádiz and Jerez de la Frontera with the suburbs of San Fernando , Puerto Real and El Puerto de Santa María . Another short line runs from the train station in Puerto Real to the University of Cadiz . The main line has two tracks, with the S-Bahn having to share the tracks with regional and long-distance trains. Nevertheless, a 15-minute cycle is possible during rush hour. There will be some relief when the high-speed line between Cádiz and Seville is completed and at least long-distance traffic can leave the line. In the urban area of the city of Cádiz, the C-1 line acts as a subway. It leads through a city tunnel with several tunnel stations . The regional and long-distance trains end at an underground main station.

Railcars of the Spanish class 440 are used for regular service. The S-Bahn networks in Cadiz and Seville share a common fleet of vehicles.

history

Originally there was a second to Sanlúcar de Barrameda in addition to the Cádiz-Jerez route . This line, which was run via Rota and Chipiona , had to be discontinued at the end of 1982 for economic reasons.

Since the city of Cádiz was only very poorly connected to the Spanish railway network, it was decided to renew the railway connection to the city. As preliminary construction work, new stops were created in the outskirts of the city of Cádiz and some suburbs in the early 1990s. In 2000 a city tunnel was built in Cadiz with several underground stations and an underground main station. During the construction period, a provisional central station was built on the outskirts, where the trains ended during the construction period. After a record construction time, the new line was opened in 2001. Outside the new tunnel, too, the railway systems in the city area were fundamentally renewed and some relocated. In 2004 work began on expanding the last single-track sections of the line to double-track. In 2005 the line C-1a was put into operation. In recent years, some old train stations along the route have been renovated and modifications have been made to integrate the high-speed line under construction. In 2011 the line was extended to Jerez Airport .

future

A regional light rail system is currently being built in the greater Cadíz area, which is to be operated by the state railway RENFE and which partly uses existing railway lines. Light rail line 1 is to run in and south of Cádiz over the existing railway line to La Ardila station, then on a new line through San Fernando and finally south to Chiclana de la Frontera . The new line has been under construction since summer 2010 and was originally supposed to go into operation in 2012. After several delays - such as a dispute between the government of Andalusia and the central government - it should be completed in 2015. However, this deadline could not be met either - in summer 2018 the route was still a construction site. In September 2014 the EU Commission decided to contribute 134 million euros to the project.

The tram line 2 will run from Cadiz train station over a new bridge over the Bay of Cadiz to the airport of Jerez de La Frontera and will also serve the Campus de Puerto Real of the University of Cadiz .

Urbos railcars in a broad gauge version from CAF are to run on both lines.
