About this picture

Zumikon is a municipality in the Meilen district in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

geography

The community is located on the western flank of the Wassberg ( 748  m above sea level ; Pfannenstiel chain ), about 200 meters above the right bank of Lake Zurich .

The neighboring communities of Zumikons are Küsnacht , Zollikon and Maur .

history

The first traces of settlement were discovered as early as the Late Bronze Age , namely the terrace settlement (Gössikon-Küsnachtertobel). Zumikon first appeared in 946 as "de Zumminga". Several place names indicate an Alemannan settlement. This includes the hamlet of Gössikon (946 Cozinchova) and Waltikon (946 Waltlinchova). In 1467 there were six households. In 1634 there were 113 inhabitants. In Zumikon there is a branch chapel of the Zurich Grossmünster in 1271 . The chapel, which was no longer used after the Reformation, was restored in 1597. A parish vicar was then appointed, but he still lived in the city of Zurich until the 18th century . In the years 1730–31 the church was rebuilt. The government council set up a reformed pastoral office in 1868 and the old branch relationship with the Grossmünster Zurich ended. From 1333 Zumikon belonged to the Zollikon part of the Reichsvogtei Zurich, which was split up in 1218, and so came to the city of Zurich with Zollikon in 1358.

There was also a domestic textile industry in this village. In 1787 only 6 people were employed in the cotton spinning mill , whereas 26 cotton and 9 mousseline looms were counted. In the 19th century, working from home changed and specialized in the silk trade (in 1850 230 people were working from home, most of them in silk weaving ). In 1850 174 people were employed in agriculture, but there were only 11 craftsmen. In 1912 the Forchbahn was opened and a train station was built. There has been a golf course since 1930. For the first time, a building zone plan was adopted in 1946 and the village bypass was inaugurated in 1963. Because of the attractive residential area, wealthy residents settled here. That is why Zumikon had the third largest tax force in the Canton of Zurich in 2011 . In 1977 the Forchbahn and the road were moved underground. A village center was built above the roof that was created in 1982, which, depending on how you feel, is called an "ideal village" or a symbol of the "Swiss spirit turned into stone" of the 1980s.

coat of arms

Blazon

Two crossed silver keys in blue.

The coat of arms was first mentioned in a coat of arms book in 1740 . The bowl as the content of the coat of arms was probably taken from the coat of arms of the church in neighboring Zollikon , both communities belonged to the area of influence of the Zurich Grossmünster . The keys in both cases refer to the insignia of the Apostle Peter . In the case of the Zumiker municipal coat of arms , the entrance is likely to have been given by his companion Apollinaris of Ravenna , to whom the chapel , which existed before 1730 in place of today's Reformed church, was consecrated before the Reformation .
