The underground station in the main station of Frankfurt am Main is an underground, four-track S-Bahn station and, along with the Hauptwache and Konstablerwache stations, one of the central nodes in the network of the Rhein-Main S-Bahn . In addition to regional and long-distance traffic, it offers transfer options to the Frankfurt am Main metro and tram network in the platform hall .

On peak days, around 800 S-Bahn trains pass the station.

Northern entrance to the underground station (2007)

The underground station is located under the northern part of the reception building of Frankfurt Central Station and its forecourt at Am Hauptbahnhof . This area mainly belongs to the Gallus district , west of the city center. The train station is part of the city tunnel through the city center. This tunnel begins immediately in front of the main train station in the track apron and continues to the east through the station district in the direction of the banking district. All S-Bahn lines from the west and north of the Rhine-Main area meet at the main station and are bundled through the city center from here. The Hauptbahnhof underground station , which was built at the same time, is located above the S -Bahn station .

The station is 20 m below the main train station. The depth of the station resulted, among other things, from undercutting the Hafenstrasse tunnel and the subway below the station forecourt. To the west, the platforms are initially followed by a turnout area, which initially merges into four (later three) tunnels, which are led in three ramps up to 39 per thousand into the platform in front of the main station. To the east is a 160 m long switch area, in which the four platform tracks are merged into two main tracks (in two single-track tunnels).

architecture

The underground station consists of two wide and 210 m long island platforms . The underground architecture is sober and modern, in clear contrast to the historicizing reception building . Until 2013 , pillars clad with orange tiles and white wall and ceiling coverings dominated the S-Bahn station . The ceiling cladding was dismantled for fire safety reasons. There was an orange ribbon halfway up the wall paneling. This was alternately interrupted by large-format line network maps and circles (also orange), each with a sign with the station name. However, the signs were partially replaced by newer ones in the typical station sign blue and the train indicator boards were completely renewed. The S-Bahn underground station was renovated in 2013. The wall and ceiling cladding as well as the columns were redesigned. The wall cladding now received horizontal stripes in different shades of green in addition to the white ones, and the pillars received a pattern of reflective mosaics.

Both platforms feature two entrances, one of which has four long escalators in the shopping mall ( "B-level") , opens under the station forecourt while the other - also with four escalators - through an intermediate level with timetables and ticket machines in the Platform halls leads. At the eastern end of the platform there is a connecting corridor to the underground station, which also has two platforms. The underground station itself can only be reached via two entrances from the B level. The two S-Bahn platforms are also connected in the western area by escalators.

An elevator leads from each of the two platforms to the station concourse, in front of which all the above-ground platforms and the station forecourt can be reached. To get to the subway, an elevator must be taken from the station forecourt to the B-level and from there another one in one of the two subway platforms. The S-Bahn station is on the D level (third basement). In the middle of the station there is an entrance that leads to an intermediate level.

history

S-Bahn tracks 104/103 and 102/101 (right), condition until 2013. The orange tiles were removed in June 2013.

At the beginning of the 1960s there were initial plans to connect the Hauptwache - the center of the city - to the central station to the west. In 1962, the city of Frankfurt, together with the Deutsche Bundesbahn, decided to plan a so-called connecting line - also known as the V-Bahn .

2004: S-Bahnzug 420 built in 1978. The ceiling paneling has not yet been dismantled and the train indicator has not yet been renewed.

On January 20, 1969, the then Federal Minister of Transport, Georg Leber, opened the construction work for the first construction stage of the Rhine-Main S-Bahn in the main station. Construction work on the main train station began in 1971. The S-Bahn station was built together with the U-Bahn station and a shared shopping arcade - the B level - in an open-plan construction. For this purpose, the north wing of the reception building was dismantled and the original stones were stored so that the listed building could be rebuilt after the completion of the underground station. The underground car park of the main station was also built as part of this major construction site.

After nine years of construction, the S-Bahn station was opened together with the first section of the city tunnel to Hauptwache station on May 28, 1978. On the same day, the extension of underground line B by one station to the main train station was opened.

From 2016 to 2018 the S-Bahn tunnel was completely closed several times, sometimes for weeks (2016 in the summer holidays, 2018 in the Easter and summer holidays and during the “long” weekends), mainly to replace tracks and install new technical infrastructure. At the same time, various stations, including the underground station, were refurbished, the platforms were temporarily blocked alternately (101/102 or 103/104) and the floor was renewed, among other things. The further upgrading in terms of fire protection and the replacement of the escalators in the mezzanine floor has not yet been fully completed (as of April 2019).

business

The S-Bahn station has two island platforms with two tracks each for both directions of travel. In order to be able to distinguish the tracks in the underground station from the one- or two-digit track numbering in the platform hall, the four tracks are preceded by a 10 . This results in three-digit track numbers. On the southern platform with tracks 101 and 102, the trains run to the city center, while on the northern tracks 103 and 104 the trains run out of town towards the airport , Höchst and Westbahnhof .

It is planned that the outer tracks 101 and 104 in normal operation, as a rule, from the S-Bahn lines S3 – S6, which after exiting the city tunnel on the route of the Homburger Bahn (parallel to the Main-Weser-Bahn ) turn, and the inner tracks 102 and 103 are used by the remaining lines S1, S2, S8 and S9, which continue straight ahead in the area in front of the station. Technically, however, the station offers a high degree of flexibility and you can choose which track is used by which line. This rule is therefore often deviated from, for example the announcement of the exit side in the S-Bahn is made separately from the station announcement immediately before the station enters the station. The two inner tracks are also equipped so that they can be used in both directions. This allows operations to continue in the event of a fault (accidents on one of the tracks, points faults, etc.).

In order to speed up the transfer from one island platform to the other, there were two direct connections between tracks 101/102 and 103/104 in addition to the normal entrances. One of these crossings at the western end of the platform was closed in the 2000s and only serves as an emergency exit. Structurally, this crossing was designed in such a way that a connection to the passenger tunnel that runs under the tracks of the main station would have been possible. However, this variant was never implemented. The second overpass was located approximately at the level of the middle of the platform and had only one escalator per island platform, these being switched so that they could be used when changing from platform 101/102 to 103/104, which also corresponds to the main flow of people transferring there . This overpass was often wrongly interpreted as an exit by travelers who were not familiar with the area, which repeatedly led to confusion. This connection was also closed in September 2017 in order to end the aforementioned confusion and to make room for the ongoing fire protection and modernization measures on the platforms.
