The Hanau-Steinheim Station (2015 Steinheim (Main) or Steinheim / Main ) is a former railway station and today's stop in Hanau at kilometer 69.9 of Südmainischen train of the Rhine-Main S-Bahn .

Location and description

The stop is on the S-Bahn line (VzG line 3680) from Frankfurt am Main to Hanau, which runs parallel to the Frankfurt-Bebraer Eisenbahn (VzG line 3600). The S-Bahn line is  single -track in the area of this stop - as is the case between Mühlheim (Main) -Dietesheim and Hanau Hauptbahnhof . The only platform is northwest of the track and is used by trains in both directions.

The platform is on the side of the track facing away from Steinheim, a somewhat unusual arrangement that is due to the fact that the route is routed over the Steinheim Main Bridge , which is immediately to the east of the stop, and the subsequent threading of the track into the Hanau main station.

The stop went into operation together with the opening of the S-Bahn in 1995 and is now served by the S 8 and S 9.

history

Today's stop replaces the former Steinheim train station (Kr. Offenbach) , which was located at the same point on the Frankfurt-Bebraer Railway (here with a distance of  21.1 kilometers ) and went into operation in 1873. Its original name was Klein Steinheim . The station building , however, was on the southeast side of the tracks. The railway system also had a freight track with freight sheds for local freight traffic.

The station served the then community of Steinheim (Kr. Offenbach) which was added to the city of Hanau in 1974 as part of the Hessian regional reform . Due to various compulsory points in the route of the Frankfurt-Bebraer Eisenbahn, such as the location of the Main Bridge and the merging with the route of the Frankfurt-Hanauer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in Hanau Hauptbahnhof (then: Hanau Ost ), the Steinheim train station came quite far from the settlement centers Steinheims, Klein-Steinheim or Niedersteinheim (0.5 kilometers) and Obersteinheim or Groß-Steinheim (1.8 kilometers), which quickly limited its importance to traffic after the advent of the car .

The dismantling of the station took place in several steps: First, in the early 1970s, the top floor and the first floor of the reception building were removed and the mutilated building torso was given a flat roof. Freight traffic was stopped. With the construction of the S-Bahn, the station was finally abandoned and the rest of the reception building removed in favor of a park-and-ride car park.

With the timetable change in December 2015, the stop has now also been renamed Hanau-Steinheim.

Planning

As part of the S-Bahn Plus program, the stop is to be expanded into a double-track crossing station. The reason is the delay-prone single-track S-Bahn line with its short crossing times in the terminus at Hanau Hbf. To this end, another track is to be built north of the current S-Bahn track. The current outer platform will then become the central platform. According to the original plans, the construction project should start in 2019 and be completed in 2022. However, the plan approval procedure had not even been initiated by April 2019.
