The Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden until 2014 InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort is a Kempinski - Hotel luxury ( 5-star ) in Berchtesgaden . It was built by a subsidiary of BayernLB after the Americans had cleared the Obersalzberg area, which was formerly a prohibited area for the Führer, as part of the Bavarian state government's two-pillar concept to revive tourism . The new hotel building based on plans by architect Herbert Kochta was opened in 2005. The hotel received a lot of media coverage , both because of its location on Obersalzberg and as part of the BayernLB crisis.

location

The hotel is located in a prominent secluded location in terms of local planning on the Eckerbichl as a small elevation of the Obersalzberg in the district of Berchtesgaden of the same name.

Construction and architecture

The hotel from a bird's eye view

The hotel was planned by the Kochta architects from Munich. The horseshoe-shaped multi-storey structure is adapted to the topography of the hilltop. The two curved bed wings extend to the right and left of the central lobby. The glass facade of the lobby in the inner courtyard provides a view of the Kehlsteinhaus . The hotel was architecturally designed in the New Objectivity style; Natural stone plinth and wooden elements characterize the facade.

The first interior design concept was developed by Mahmoudieh Design from Berlin. André Behncke from Munich is responsible for the revision and the current interior design. The construction work was carried out by the Schmölzl company from Bayerisch Gmain , which was commissioned to blow up the buildings of the Nazi giants as early as the 1950s. The construction costs were in the order of 50 million euros.

Below the hotel is the Berchtesgaden Golf Club with a 9-hole course and a small ski area. In 2007 a helicopter landing pad was set up for VIP guests and the conference area was expanded.

The hotel distinguishes itself primarily as a resort and as an upscale location for visiting tourism in the region, from the festival city of Salzburg to the Berchtesgaden National Park .

history

Goering's house on the Obersalzberg

The Obersalzberg was one of the cradles of tourism in Berchtesgaden until it came to a standstill in the course of the conversion to the Führer's restricted area . At the current hotel location, the Eckerbichl, Göring's house was located during the Nazi era . From then on, the Eckerbichl was also known as Göringhügel . Ownership of the land was transferred to the Free State of Bavaria after the Second World War . A first attempt to revive tourism on the Obersalzberg in the 1950s failed and resulted in the Steigenberger affair , as the Obersalzberg remained occupied by the Americans even after the war. Despite contracts with Steigenberger , the buildings were therefore not available for general tourism.

When the Free State was able to freely dispose of the site on Obersalzberg again in 1996 after the Americans left, the two-pillar concept was decided, consisting of a luxury hotel project and the Obersalzberg documentation - the hotel project was to tie in with the tourist tradition of Obersalzberg before the Third Reich the documentation of the "special history of the place" take into account. As part of the tender for the hotel project, an Arab applicant also showed interest. However, the contract was awarded to Gewerbegrund , a subsidiary of BayernLB . The InterContinental Hotels Group was selected as the operator at that time .

In 2000, the Platterhof, first mentioned as a stone house loan in 1385, was the largest building from the National Socialist era on Obersalzberg. The Americans called it Hotel General Walker . The demolition was not without controversy in the region and beyond, a referendum was initiated , but not pushed through to the referendum . The demolition was carried out to make room for the relocation of the Kehlsteinhaus departure point and thus the prerequisites for the construction of the luxury hotel. In 2005 the hotel was opened to a great media coverage.

In the course of the Landesbank crisis, it was criticized that the Free State of Bavaria is indirectly involved in the hotel. When the hotel's loss of millions became known, Finance Minister Georg Fahrenschon ( CSU ) announced that Bayerische Landesbank (BayernLB) would withdraw from the financial stake. Kurt Faltlhauser , at the time the Bavarian Finance Minister was established , defended participation as an element of the two-pillar model.

Clemens Rambichler , now the successor to Helmut Thieltges, head chef of the three-star restaurant Sonnora in Dreis , learned from 2006 in the restaurant 360 ° of the Interconti Berchtesgaden and after his training he worked in the gourmet restaurant of today's Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden Le Ciel from 2009 to 2011 active.

In spring 2015, the operator changed from the InterContinental Hotels Group to Kempinski .
