Documentation Obersalzberg

The Obersalzberg documentation is a place of learning and remembrance during the Nazi era at the perpetrator location of the Führer's restricted area Obersalzberg in Berchtesgaden . It connects the local history with the entire history of National Socialism .

location

The Obersalzberg documentation building was built on the foundations of the former Hoher Göll guest house . This belonged to the KdF hotel complex Platterhof within the Führer's restricted area Obersalzberg . The documentation is close to Busabfahrtsstelle to Eagle's Nest , which as the Big Five designated tourist offers focus on the county sub-region Berchtesgaden and the most famous sights of Berchtesgaden county land counts. Since tourists have to park their cars next to the documentation on the way to the Kehlsteinhaus and from there can only get to their destination with the Kehlsteinlinie buses , quite a few also associate this with a visit to the documentation.

Adolf Hitler had chosen Obersalzberg, which at that time was a popular second home and vacation spot for prominent Germans, as a vacation spot in the 1920s. After the " seizure of power ", he had the Berghof expanded into his representative residence. It was the center of the Führer's restricted area Obersalzberg, which also included residential buildings for numerous other Nazi figures. After the Second World War , the area served the American armed forces as a recreation center.

In 1996, the USA finally decided not to use the area any longer. The Free State of Bavaria could now actually dispose of the former NSDAP properties transferred to it . The two- pillar concept was developed under the responsibility of the responsible Bavarian Finance Minister Kurt Faltlhauser (CSU), one pillar of which is a documentation center on the local and entire Nazi era , the other is the resurgence of tourism at this point in order to prevent the emergence of a pilgrimage site for right-wing extremists and to set up a counterpart to the commercial use of the site. The Bavarian state government decided to create the Obersalzberg documentation on this area next to a luxury hotel .

Opened on October 20, 1999, the Obersalzberg Documentation received an extension with seminar rooms in 2005, and in 2006 a new exhibition room was completed in the bunker of the former Hotel Platterhof, which had been expanded to include Hitler's guest house, for temporary exhibitions. An architectural competition has already taken place for a further expansion.

Sponsorship, operator and management

Since its opening, the documentation has been carried out by the Berchtesgadener Landesstiftung , which in turn has appointed the Berchtesgaden-Königssee Tourist Region Association to operate this documentation center.

The scientific and museum management lies with the Institute for Contemporary History , Munich - Berlin. On the state side, the documentation is managed by the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance as a property of the Free State of Bavaria .

From 1996 to 1999 Volker Dahm was project manager and from 1999 to 2009 scientific director. The current director is Sven Keller, who replaced Axel Drecoll in June 2018, who was appointed director of the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation . The deputy director and curator is Albert Feiber.

concept

The Obersalzberg documentation includes parts of the still-preserved bunker systems and connects Obersalzberg's past as a Führer's restricted area with documents and exhibits that also present the involvement of the local population in National Socialist politics .

A permanent exhibition and regularly changing exhibitions are shown. It's not just about what happened in Obersalzberg, but about the entire Nazi dictatorship. The documentation Obersalzberg wants to present the history of Obersalzberg during the time of the national socialism and the connections to the whole national socialist politics in order to u. a. also to counteract the tourist interests, which until then were solely concerned with “commercial exploitation”, which for decades have allowed the kiosks at the bus stop to sell “historical rubbish” in the form of “souvenirs with idyllic National Socialist motifs and, above all, lurid glossy brochures that seem to be objective about the What happened on the Obersalzberg during the Hitler era provided information, but actually glorified history and played down the National Socialist regime ”.

Starting with the "showcase page" in the light building - u. a. Based on image and sound documents about enthusiastic young girls who were waiting in front of the Berghof by the thousands for their “Führer” - the presentation of the effects of the Nazi regime in the dark and cool of the bunker with documents about the extermination of the Jews is gradually transferred its end.

Last but not least, a slide show with interviews with former residents of Obersalzberg seeks to present an illuminating commentary on the events on site and world events at that time.

reception

In 2007 the one millionth visitor, on July 19, 2010 the 1.5 millionth visitor and on July 18, 2013 the two millionth visitor was welcomed by the Bavarian State Minister of Finance, Markus Söder , in the Obersalzberg documentation . In the medium term, 150,000 to 160,000 visitors are now expected annually, which in 2013 led to the decision of the Bavarian cabinet to expand the documentation. According to this, the exhibition area is to be doubled from spring 2016 in a three-year construction period and completed for around 22 million euros by 2019. After "long but good advice" from the Bavarian State Parliament about the costs, the start of construction was delayed to 2017. The costs rose to 30 million euros by the beginning of 2019.
