The railway line Frankfurt-Hanau slaughterhouse is a transit route from the Rhine-Main S-Bahn is used and the Frankfurt City Tunnel over the Offenbach City Tunnel connects and Mühlheim with Hanau. For the most part, it runs parallel to the long-distance railway line (see the Hanau – Frankfurt line ) and was built to relieve this. To distinguish it from the planned North Main S-Bahn route to Hanau via Maintal, the route is also known as the South Main S-Bahn .

history

Planning

Planning options for the route between Frankfurt and Offenbach

Different routes were discussed between Frankfurt and Offenbach. The decision was made in favor of a route north of Oberrad along the existing route and through the Offenbach City Tunnel , which bypasses Offenbach Central Station.

construction

The first section between the Frankfurt (Main) Schlachthof junction and the Frankfurt (Main) Mühlberg train station was opened in 1992. This part of the route lies entirely in a branch of the Frankfurt City Tunnel .

On May 23, 1995, the section to Offenbach Ost through the Offenbach City Tunnel went into operation. A few days later, on May 28, the entire line to Hanau was put into operation.

course

Main bridge

The line runs between the Ostendstraße and local train stations at no elevation from the Frankfurt Hbf deep – Frankfurt Süd railway line and runs parallel to the long-distance line at the former Frankfurt-Oberrad station for a short time. Here it uses the former route of the Frankfurt-Offenbach local railway . She continues to follow the route, even if she enters the Offenbach City Tunnel shortly afterwards . The line bypasses Offenbach main station through this and merges again with the long-distance railway line in Offenbach (Main) Ost . From there the routes run above ground directly parallel to each other to Hanau main station . Shortly before the end of the route, it crosses the Main , otherwise the route runs south of the Main .

The S-Bahn line is between Offenbach Ost and Dietesheim south of the long-distance railway line and then swings to the north side. The entire section is single-track except for the Mühlheim – Dietesheim encounter section, with the Steinheim station only having one edge of the platform. A single-track bridge for the S-Bahn was built on the north side of the existing Main Bridge immediately east of the Steinheim station. The location in Hanau's main train station was chosen in such a way that it can also be approached from the north Main line in the future.

The kilometering will continue from the Frankfurt Hbf – Frankfurt Süd railway line . This begins in Frankfurt (Main) Hbf (deep) with kilometer 50.

traffic

S-Bahn stop Steinheim (Main)

Today the S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S8 and S9 run on the S-Bahn branch . The S1 and S2 lines only use the route between Frankfurt and Offenbach Ost, from where they continue to Rödermark-Ober Roden or Dietzenbach Bahnhof . The S8 only runs to Hanau during rush hour and otherwise ends in Offenbach Ost. The S9 travels the entire length of the route.

All S-Bahn lines run every half hour, so that eight trains per hour between Frankfurt and Offenbach Ost and two trains between Offenbach Ost and Hanau. During rush hour there is a 15-minute cycle on the Offenbach – Hanau section. Mainly trains of the DB class 420 were used until November 2014 , since then trains of the DB class 430 as a rule .

The S-Bahn first ran between Offenbach and Hanau in 1995. At that time the route was only used by the S8. In 1999 the short commuter trains that ran between Hanau and Rüsselsheim were extended over the Kostheimer Bridge to Mainz-Kastel and on to Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof and renamed the S9.
