The Limes Railway is a continuously single-track and electrified main railway line that connects Frankfurt am Main , Niederhöchstadt and Bad Soden am Taunus on the western outskirts .

The 5.2-kilometer route was opened in 1972 and is part of the Rhein-Main S-Bahn . It is a cross connection between two suburban railways built in the 19th century , the Sodener Bahn (1847) and the Kronberger Bahn (1874).

The reason for the construction of the line was the simultaneous (1962–73) construction of the Limesstadt settlement in Schwalbach am Taunus . The Limesspange road tangent ( L3014 ), which ran almost parallel and was also built at the time, also bears the Limes in its name, which actually ran about 10 km further north in the Taunus .

History and present

After a considerable housing estate under the name " Limesstadt " had been built on the outskirts of Schwalbach in the Main-Taunus district "on the green meadow" since 1964 , it was recognized that a satisfactory development with public transport was only possible by rail. With the help of the member of the Bundestag Georg Leber , who was Federal Minister of Transport from 1966 to 1972 , it was possible to build an electrically operated branch line here from the very beginning .

On December 22, 1970, a shuttle service was opened between the Niederhöchstadt station on the Kronberger Bahn and the new Schwalbach Limesbahnhof station. On November 6, 1972, the existing gap to Bad Soden was closed, which until then only had a rail connection with Frankfurt-Höchst through the Soden Railway.

Since May 28, 1978 the S-Bahn line S3 has been running on this route from Bad Soden, initially to Frankfurt (Main) Hauptwache , today to Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof .

Schwalbach North

The Schwalbach Nord stop has been used by the S3 since October 31, 2008 . This is located between the Schwalbach Limes and Niederhöchstadt stations . The “Am Kronberger Hang” industrial park in Schwalbach am Taunus thus had its own stop to allow employees of large companies such as u. a. Samsung , Data General and EMC2 enable a shorter commute to the workplace. The stop consists of a 210 meter long platform , which has been made barrier-free .

The estimated construction costs of the new stop amounted to 1.5 million euros, the planning costs amounted to 300,000 euros. The start of construction was originally planned for September 2007, but was delayed until February 2008.
