The Frankfurt (Main) Hauptwache Station with 181,000 passengers per day, the third largest rapid transit node of the city of Frankfurt am Main and a major hub of rail transport in the Rhine-Main area . In addition to the S-Bahn - lines S1-S6 and S8 / S9 here also hold the metro -lines U1-U3 and U6-U8. The station is named after the former city guard of the same name .
history
In 1961 the city council of Frankfurt decided to build an underground network. The connection of a new large housing estate - the Northwest City - to the city center was the background for the routing of the first underground line. In 1963, construction work began near the current Miquel- / Adickesallee / Police headquarters (today the foundation stone can be found there). The first section of the underground, the A-route , opened in 1968. It led from today's Nordwestzentrum station to the main guard station. In 1971 the section to Ginnheim followed . Two years later, the line to the Theaterplatz underground station , now Willy-Brandt-Platz, was extended, so the main station was no longer the terminus. In 1978, the traffic with adapted tram cars of the type Mt was stopped on the A-route , so that now only light rail cars were running to Oberursel - Hohemark . Thus the lines U1 – U3 drove to the station, in 2010 the line U8, which also runs on the A route , was added.
The development of the S-Bahn traffic took more time. Although the German Federal Railroad decided to build a S-Bahn network as early as 1962 , it was only possible to open it 16 years later - on May 28, 1978. Hauptwache was the terminus for all lines at that time until 1983. In order to enable the trains to turn quickly, the new driver got into the rear driver's cab at the main station and was able to steer the train in the opposite direction after a short waiting period. With the opening of the Konstablerwache S-Bahn station , the Hauptwache station became a through station.
Trams have stopped running at the Hauptwache since 1986.
