location

The station is located under Eschersheimer Landstrasse a little north of the Grüneburgweg / Fichardstrasse intersection at Gervinusstrasse on the border between the north and west end and is served by the U1, U2, U3 and U8 underground lines. The junctions Hauptwache , Konstablerwache and Willy-Brandt-Platz can be reached from here with the short-haul tariff.

The Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts , the Handelsblatt -haus, various restaurants and the small Hotel Mondial, which hit the headlines in October 1992 in connection with the smuggling of strontium from the former Eastern Bloc, are close to the station . The senior citizens' town hall, which used to be on the corner of Fichardstrasse, moved to Dornbusch in 2005.

On October 4, 1968, the station was opened with the commissioning of the first section of the A-line from the main guard to the north-west town. The subway station itself is kept in the simple style of the 1960s, straight lines and right angles determine the design. Like all the stations in the first construction phase of the Frankfurt U-Bahn, it has two side platforms of medium width, each of which is connected to the distribution level ("B level") via two fixed and one escalator . The station has four exits.

The original blue enamel paneling on the wall was replaced by green ceramic tiles in the 1990s to give the station a friendlier and more appropriate design. The barrier-free renovation of the station with elevators began in early 2008 and was completed in 2009.

Accidents in 1984

In the summer of 1984 there were a number of accidents at the Grüneburgweg station. On June 3, at 12:33 p.m., the first railcar of a train on the U1 line derailed when entering the station out of town, which meant that operations on the main line were suspended for about three hours. After the accident, the possible causes were investigated on this section of the tunnel and a temporary speed limit was imposed. The curve area south of the station, with a radius of 170 m, is one of the narrowest places in the A-route tunnel. In this area, extensive track construction work was then carried out during the nightly breaks in operation, while a speed limit at 10 km / h was set up during the day . In the process, sleepers were replaced, the ballast bed was partially cleared and the guardrails used to protect against derailment were temporarily dismantled.

On July 11th at 6:41 a.m. there was a serious accident, in which a train on line U2 derailed at the construction site and the middle car was badly damaged. Since the accident occurred in front of the station, the recovery was difficult and the tunnel was closed until the afternoon. On the same day at 6:45 p.m., another U1 train derailed - this time the last car. Like the first accident, the accident only occurred in the station, as the guardrails were temporarily reassembled. No one was injured in any of the accidents. A later investigation showed that the accidents on July 11 were not caused by the drivers , but by the hazardous situation caused by the construction site.
