Location and architecture

The Eschenheimer Tor underground station is located directly below the square, in the area of the ramparts . It was created from 1963 and opened in 1968. The then transport planning envisaged a broad unbundling of pedestrian traffic from automobile traffic. Accordingly, a large underground distribution level (B level) was created under the entire square, which not only serves as access to the subway. Pedestrians should also descend into the plain in order to cross the square. In the meantime, however, there are also pedestrian crossings above ground.

The architects Wolfgang Bader and Artur Walter impressed with their model of the Eschenheimer Tor underground station in an invited competition. The expert draft recommended the draft for execution. The Bader / Walter office was awarded the contract to design all of the stations on the A-line of the underground, from the Hauptwache to the above-ground stops on Eschersheimer Landstrasse. The design of these above-ground stations has been simplified again compared to their concept. Straight lines and right angles determine the design of the Eschenheimer Tor station. The platforms are connected to the distribution level via fixed and escalators . The station shows as a prototype the cost and time pressure under which the construction of the first Frankfurt light rail line took place. The architects' original plan was for an open hall with entrances at the ends.

Track system

The station has two side platforms of medium width, the platforms are not perfectly parallel, but separate towards the north. The reason for this is that there is a siding between the two tracks. Trains are occasionally parked here overnight. It is used for turning in the event of malfunctions.
