The Nordwestzentrum underground station (until 1990 Nordweststadt ) is an underground station in Frankfurt am Main . On October 4, 1968, it was the terminus of the first Frankfurt subway line (then A1 ) from the satellite settlement of Nordweststadt to the city center ( Hauptwache ). Today it is served by the U1 and U9 lines.
location
The underground station is located in a short tunnel section under the large housing estate of Nordweststadt. The tunnel begins at the Heddernheimer Landstrasse station and leads under Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse to the Nordwest-Shopping Center, from where the tunnel reaches Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse again. At the Römerstadt station, the route changes into an elevated section that runs in the middle between the lanes of the city motorway.
The train station is located under the large underground car park of the North West Center . A bus station integrated into the ground floor of the center and the shopping center itself can be reached directly via an intermediate level above the train station. The intermediate level - also called B level - also serves as access to the underground car park.
history
The underground station was built together with the Northwest Center and inaugurated on the same day. The route of the A1 was extended on September 29, 1974 by one station to the south to the Römerstadt underground station . Since then, the Nordweststadt train station is no longer the terminus. Since May 27, 1978, the line , known since then as U1 , has been running to its current terminus in Ginnheim .
The northwest center was rebuilt and expanded in 1986/88 and 2004. In 1990 the previously very simply designed underground station was also rebuilt and made more attractive. The measure took place with the financial participation of the shopping center, whose name the station has been bearing ever since.
The station is the busiest station on the branch of the U1, it is not only interesting for customers of the Nordwestzentrum, which also houses many social facilities and a large indoor swimming pool, but also serves as a transfer station to many bus lines with connections to the nearby parts of the city Heddernheim , Rödelheim , Niederursel and the neighboring towns of Oberursel and Steinbach .
The modernized station can now be reached barrier-free with elevators, via an intermediate level you can get from the platforms directly to the shopping center, bus station or parking garage.
architecture
The station and the adjoining tunnel sections were built entirely using the cut-and-cover method, after which the north-west center was built above. The original design of the station corresponded to the other underground stations on the A route. The wall cladding consisted of white enamel panels , while the columns arranged between the tracks remained unclad.
During the renovation, walls and pillars were clad with polished light gray natural stone, and the platforms were given a new covering. This is the first and so far only complete renovation of an underground Frankfurt subway station. Today the station is brightly designed and, like many newer Frankfurt underground stations, offers free lines of sight from the mezzanine level to the platforms.
