The Frankfurt-Nied train station is a stop on the Rhein-Main S-Bahn network .
location
The stop is in the Nied district at the crossing of the Main-Lahn-Bahn via Oeserstraße . It forms the border between the two urban districts of Nied-Nord and Nied-Süd and thus separates the developed town center in the south from the settlement architecture in the north. Kahnplatz and Nieder Friedhof are to the northwest of the train station .
The train station is structurally similar to the Frankfurt-Sindlingen train station : Oeserstraße is an underpass under the train tracks, while pedestrian traffic runs separately over walkways and stairs.
The long-term plan is to move the station from Oeserstraße to Mainzer Landstraße in order to create a better connection to tram line 11 .
history
The Main-Lahn-Bahn has been running through Nied since 1879. In 1888, the then independent village received its own stopping point for the first time at the intersection with Rödelheimer Straße (today's Oeserstraße ). The small station building soon no longer met the requirements and was replaced in 1915 by a larger, representative building in the northwest of Oeserstrasse. For the commissioning of the Rhein-Main S-Bahn , the platforms were relocated to the south-eastern side of Oeserstraße and the reception building lost its use. The underpass of Oeserstraße was opened to traffic in 1988 and thus replaced a barred level crossing .
In 1990 Frankfurt's first covered bicycle racks were set up at Nieder Bahnhof, with the result that the new “Bike & Ride” concept to promote public transport in combination with bicycles as a means of transport was also introduced in Frankfurt.
In the summer of 2007, the station, which was badly damaged by vandalism, was renovated. Students from the neighboring Niddaschule have artistically designed parts of the underpass. Since April 2008 the platforms have been equipped with digital displays for passenger information ( DFI ).
In the summer of 2019, the two platforms were artistically designed by committed citizens of Lower Saxony and freed from graffiti and vandalism damage.
traffic
The stop is served by the S-Bahn lines S1 and S2. The connection to local transport is provided by bus route 59 with the stops at Nied Bahnhof / Lotzstraße and Nied Bahnhof / Friedhof . The night bus line n8 also stops at the two stops .
Lines S1 and S2 usually run every 30 minutes and , when the traffic is low, every hour, so that when combined, the result is a continuous 15 or 30 minute cycle. During rush hour, both lines are reinforced by so-called short commuting, which when coming from the west do not use the city tunnel , but end at the main train station. The S1 line is also reinforced by such trains at lunchtime. This means that there is a dense cycle of six trains per hour during the day - eight trains per hour during rush hour - which alternately connect Nied to the main station every five or ten minutes. The travel time to the city center is around ten minutes.
