History and role in the network of the Rhein-Main S-Bahn

View from the platform of the S-Bahn station in southern direction

The S-Bahn station Stresemannallee was built in the early 1990s together with the 213-meter-long S-Bahn tunnel Frankfurt Stresemannalle, which crosses the long-distance railway tracks, as the first section of the separate tracks for the southern outer branches of the S-Bahn Rhein Main.

For this purpose, the old underpass of the street of the same name was replaced by a much wider new building to the east of it.

This S-Bahn station formed the end point of the two southern outer branches of the Rhein-Main S-Bahn for several years . Lines S5 (from Bad Homburg and Friedrichsdorf ) and S6 (from Friedberg ) ended here. Through the western track apron of the Südbahnhof, the new route 3688 in the Südbahnhof connects to the routes 3681 and 3682 coming from the Frankfurt City Tunnel .

In the course of the construction of the own tracks (route # 3688) of the S-Bahn Rhein-Main along the Main-Neckar-Bahn, which went into operation in 1997, the next stop is the Frankfurt-Louisa station ; from there the route leads via Langen to Darmstadt . The connecting curve of the Main-Neckar-Bahn to the Südbahnhof (route # 3604) runs parallel to the station.

In 2014 a new line of the Frankfurt tram was opened, which with the new line 17 got a stop below the railway bridge and the train station; this is also served by the city bus route 78.
