The Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Bologna (SFMB) is an S-Bahn -like local transport system in the northern Italian city of Bologna .
history
Official plans for the construction of a suburban railway-like local transport system existed in Bologna since 1982. In 1995 a first line from Bologna to Ferrara was opened. The further expansion depended to a considerable extent on the construction of an underground station for high-speed trains under the Bologna Centrale station. Since the underground station opened in June 2013, the freed up above-ground capacities can be used by the SFMB.
Line network
The network has a trunk line with Bologna Central Station as the center. All lines run over at least part of the main route. The network is divided into eight branches. Lines that end at Bologna Central Station (S3, S5) run on two branches. There are three lines running on the six other branches, which, depending on the branch traveled, lead to the letter A or B as an addition to the line designation (S1A / S1B).
