The Halle-Neustadt S-Bahn tunnel is a double-track railway tunnel in the Neustadt district of Halle (Saale) . In the area of the district center it crosses the main road, the Neustädter Passage, the Albert-Einstein-Straße and the street “Am Bruchsee” (today's street names). The 454 meter long tunnel has a box-shaped profile and houses the Halle-Neustadt train station on the S7 line of the Central German S-Bahn . It was the only new construction of a tunnel station for the DR . The tracks in the tunnel belong to different routes, although it is usually used like a double-track route in one direction. The western track is route 6356 (Halle-Nietleben – Merseburg), the eastern track is 6355 (Halle-Nietleben – Abzw Awo).

In the course of the planning and construction of Halle-Neustadt, the construction of an S-Bahn line was also planned, which would connect the forecast 100,000 inhabitants of the “workers' city” to the main station in Halle and thus to the GDR's railway network . The original idea of building a new train station in the classic style west of Halle-Neustadt was discarded in favor of a central variant. In order not to cut up the future city center with the planned railway systems, the station should be moved underground. After several years of construction, the tunnel station was inaugurated on September 27, 1969. Its commissioning also marked the beginning of electrical traffic on the existing S-Bahn section to the main train station, which until then had been used by diesel multiple units.

The tunnel station could originally be reached via three entrances (one stairway each in the north and south as well as at the level of the Neustädter Passage). During the renovation of the station and the entrances between 2008 and 2010, the northern staircase was removed and a partition wall was put in. The originally 380 meter long side platforms were shortened to 230 meters usable length. The station building was above the tunnel at the north exit and was a glazed steel frame construction. It was canceled in early 2010 after several unsuccessful attempts to use it and a long period of vacancy.

Traffic control

Since the Halle S-Bahn was fully operational, the tunnel has been used by all S-Bahn trains between Halle-Trotha station and Halle-Dölau station. In 2002 the S-Bahn, now known as Line S7, was shortened north of the tunnel to the section to Halle-Nietleben. Since the section to Trotha was taken over by the S3 line coming from Leipzig in December 2015, trains to and from Nietleben have only run to the main station.
