The Luxembourg railway station is a tunnel station of the Paris train network RER .

History and description

Terminus of the Ligne de Sceaux

The station was opened in 1895 as the new terminus of the Ligne de Sceaux suburban railway operated by the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans (PO) at the time ; it is located alongside the Boulevard Saint-Michel . From the previous Paris terminus D'Enfer to Luxembourg, the route - a novelty in the city - was laid underground. The steam locomotives used were equipped with a condensation device in order to reduce the air pollution caused by them in the tunnel area.

In 1937/38, the Ligne de Sceaux was electrified with 1500  volts DC by means of an overhead line. The new operator was the Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris (CMP), which was incorporated into the RATP in 1948 . From 1934 onwards, CMP ordered class Z 23000 railcars especially for this route, several series of which were delivered up to 1962. They were used in multiple traction without a sidecar .

Extensive renovations were made in connection with the redesign of the route to the RER line B and its extension to the north in 1977 to Châtelet - Les Halles station . This extension crosses under various metro and RER lines and also the Seine . In order to be able to maintain the specified maximum gradient of the route, the tracks at the Luxembourg station and, as a result, the platforms and overhead lines, had to be lowered by around 50 cm.

From 2000 to 2001 the station received its current appearance after a complete renovation. In the immediate vicinity are the eponymous park Jardin du Luxembourg and the mining university École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris . In 2011, 5.8 million passengers got on or off here.

Since 2008, the station has been rebuilt so that it is easier to reach for people with reduced mobility. Two elevators are to be installed.
