Owned by the Masovian Voivodeship, the company employed 2,584 people in 2011 and transported 62.5 million travelers in 2014. Modernized vehicles from Polskie Koleje Państwowe and Deutsche Bahn as well as new vehicles from Stadler , Pesa , Bombardier and Newag are used .

history

Foundation and beginnings

All rail traffic in the Masovian Voivodeship was carried out by the Polish state railway Polskie Koleje Państwowe until 2001 . On October 1, 2001, a reform came into force that outsourced the PKP's passenger transport to a company called Przewozy Regionalne . The voivodships should order transport services from Przewozy Regionalne with funds allocated by the state. The Mazovian Voivodeship in particular criticized this model: instead of long-term contracts, there were only short-term agreements. In order to counteract this, the Koleje Mazowieckie was founded on July 29, 2004 at the instigation of the administration of the voivodship. The Masovian Voivodeship initially held 51 percent of the shares, the rest remained with Przewozy Regionalne. To carry out the operation, 184 electric multiple units of the PKP series EN57 were rented from Przewozy Regionalne , and a leasing contract was also concluded with Deutsche Bahn , which enabled Koleje Mazowieckie to use vehicles of the DB series 627 and DB series 628.0 from December 2005 . The train drivers were employed by PKP Cargo . In 2006, the interim leasing of locomotives of the PKP series ET22 , which had originally been designed for freight traffic, followed.

Detachment from Przewozy Regionalne and modernization of the vehicle fleet

The Masovian Voivodeship increased its stake in Koleje Mazowieckie to 95 percent in 2006 and has been its sole shareholder since 2008. At the same time, the EN57 leased from Przewozy Regionalne and also some vehicles from the PKP EN71 series and all two vehicles from the PKP EW60 series were acquired. On January 1, 2007, the Koleje Mazowieckie took over 400 train drivers from PKP Cargo. As the first new vehicles were ten multiple units of the type Stadler Flirt ordered that in a specially opened for business Mazowieckie Siedlce were produced. The first two Flirt went into operation on May 31, 2008.

In 2009 an extensive, 113-vehicle modernization program of the old-style multiple units took place at the Polish company Newag . The vehicles received new interior equipment and modernized driver's cabs. At Bombardier Transportation 37 new ones were Bombardier double-deck coaches , including the appropriate control car purchased. The plan was to rent push-pull electric locomotives. However, this did not succeed, which is why KM had to fall back on locomotives of the PKP series EU07 , which had been rented from PKP Cargo. These locomotives were repainted in the color scheme of the Koleje Mazowieckie, but were not suitable for push-pull trains, so that time-consuming repositioning was necessary at the destination station . In order to remedy this problem, eleven Bombardier Traxx machines were soon ordered to replace the EU07.

In the following years, the Koleje Mazowieckie ordered various vehicles from the two large Polish manufacturers Pesa and Newag. Pesa delivered 16 type Elf electric multiple units , 7 type 214M diesel multiple units , two Gama type electric locomotives and 22 Sundeck type double-decker cars . Newag supplied 12 electric multiple units of the type Impuls and two diesel multiple units of the type 222M .

Route network and passenger numbers

Network map of Koleje Mazowieckie

The Koleje Mazowieckie route network is star-shaped towards the city of Warsaw and also serves all of the major train stations there. From Warsaw there are direct connections to Skierniewice , Łowicz , Działdowo , Łuków , Małkinia Górna , Dęblin and Skarżysko-Kamienna . Important hubs outside Warsaw are Tłuszcz , Radom , Legionowo and Siedlce . KM operates its own ticket machines , but Przewozy Regionalne tickets are also recognized on Koleje Mazowieckie trains. In the area of the Warsaw Transport Association, KM also recognizes network tickets that can also be used for city buses , the Warsaw tram , the Warsaw metro and the SKM Warsaw . Tickets can also be redeemed from the conductor on the train .

In the summer months, from June to August, the Koleje Mazowieckie offer the "Słoneczny" (from Polish słońce : sun) a train connection from Warsaw via the Tricity to Ustka on the Polish Baltic coast . This train, aimed at tourists , was initially made up of old multi -unit railcars , today it is usually made up of double-decker cars. The journey from Warsaw to the coast takes place in the morning and the return journey in the evening. Compared to the regular price of long-distance PKP Intercity tickets , the "Słoneczny" is a discounted offer.

At the start of operations in 2005, 530 train journeys were made on 10 lines per day and 40 million passengers were transported per year. In 2010, 53 million travelers were counted, in 2011 this number rose slightly to 54 million. In 2014, 15 lines were operated, around 800 train journeys were made per day and 62.5 million passengers were carried every year.
