The Łuków station is the junction of the Warszawa – Brest railway with the Łuków – Radom railway and the Pilawa – Łuków freight line and the Łuków – Lublin railway , which is operated from Łuków for a piece of goods traffic again, while the next piece is closed.

history

The exact founding time of the place is not known. However, in 1233 the place was the seat of a castle bailiff. Due to its location near the border, the place was of strategic importance. In 1241 and 1244 the place was invaded and destroyed by the Tatars . In 1369 Casimir the Great gave the place its right as a free place . The town charter was granted on June 23, 1403 according to Magdeburg law . The craft and trade helped the town in the 16th and early 17th century to its greatest prosperity. In 1526 the city even got the right to send its own envoy to the Sejm . The wars against the Cossacks from 1648 to 1654 and against the Swedes from 1655 to 1660 halted the city's development.

After the destruction, the place received the seat of a castle bailiff again in 1775 . In 1795 the city became part of the Habsburg Empire . In 1809 the place became part of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 of Congress Poland . In 1866 the place was connected to the rail network from Warsaw to Brest . In 1939 there were 12,785 people in the city. During the Second World War , a ghetto was established in the city , in which mainly Jews, both from the city itself and from other cities, had to live. Some of them were murdered directly in the ghetto or later deported to the Treblinka extermination camp or the Majdanek concentration camp . On July 23, 1944, the Red Army reached the place. On July 24th and 25th, the place was bombed again by the Germans and was 80% destroyed by the end of the war. In 1945 about 7,900 people lived in the city. In 1975 Łuków lost its seat as a powiat and belonged to the Siedlce Voivodeship until 1998 . From 1999 the place was again the seat of the powiat and part of the Lublin Voivodeship.

Surname

The name of the place is derived from the Polish words łęg (wet meadow) and łuk (arch), which describes the area at the time the place was founded.
