Rodalies Barcelona ( Catalan for 'local transport Barcelona', Spanish name Cercanías Barcelona ) is a suburban railway network that connects the capital of Catalonia , the city of Barcelona , with the surrounding area. It is operated by the Spanish railway company RENFE (since January 1, 2010 on behalf of the Catalan regional government) and the Catalan national railway FGC . The network is comparable to German S-Bahn networks. However, some lines have more of the character of a regional train .

Infrastructure

The network consists of a total of 19 lines that connect the city with the surrounding area. Eight of these are operated by RENFE ( Renfe Operadora ) and eleven by FGC. However, only the four FGC lines beginning with the letter “R” are counted as part of the Rodalies network. The lines marked with an "S" also have a standard similar to that of the S-Bahn, but are not part of the actual Rodalies network due to their higher station density.

Lines R5, R50, R6 and R60 are operated by the state-owned Catalan railway company FGC on a narrow-gauge infrastructure. The lines of the state railway RENFE R1 to R4 as well as R7 and R8 run as broad-gauge railways in the usual gauge on the Iberian Peninsula .

The FGC lines start under the Plaça d'Espanya in a tunnel that is also used by metro trains from the same operator. The route only comes to light after the neighboring town of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat has been crossed. In this section, the S-Bahn has more of the function of an express subway, which leaves out some stops.

The RENFE lines use two different tunnels as a trunk route in the city center. Coming from the south, all rail traffic disappears underground. There the long-distance trains end at the underground station Barcelona-Sants . Behind the train station, two tunnels lead through the city and meet in the north at an intersection, where the tracks come back into daylight. The eastern tunnel is used exclusively by S-Bahn trains. Line R2 and other regional trains run in the western tunnel.

The terminus of lines R1 to R4 are up to 100 kilometers from Barcelona. In Spain it is quite common that the S-Bahn a long path have. However, only individual trains run the entire route. Some trips on the R3 line are run as a regional train from Vic via Ripoll and Planoles to Puigcerdà on the French border and to the French station Latour-de-Carol - Enveitg in the Pyrenees . The R7 line goes around the city in an arc. However, it only forms a ¾ ring. That means it is not served in ring traffic.

At the beginning of 2009, the Spanish government approved a 4 billion euro investment package to expand the system by 2015. Among other things, the route network was enlarged from 467 to 492 km, and the platforms at all 107 existing stations were lengthened and raised to 200 m / 680 mm above the top of the rails and the introduction of ETCS and GSM-R are planned. In addition, nine new stations and around 6,900 new Park & Ride parking spaces were to be created. The implementation should be completed in 2015. In mid-2015, the equipment of a 56 km long section between the train stations L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Mataró with the train control system ETCS Level 2 was put out to tender. The contract awarded by ADIF to a joint venture between Alstom and Bombardier at the end of 2015 for 54 million euros for the equipment and a further 34 million euros for maintenance over 20 years. According to ADIF, this should increase capacity and operational quality. The equipment order has a term of 21 months. The client and contractor later negotiated a new term. A new commissioning date has not yet been set (as of March 2019).
