Tårnby Kommune is a Danish municipality in the Hovedstaden region southeast of Copenhagen on the central part of the island of Amager . Tårnby itself is part of the capital region Hovedstadsområdet , but not the rural parts of the municipality. Outside the closed settlement area, however, only 450 of the 42,989 inhabitants of the municipality live (as of January 1, 2020).
The municipality has a size of 66.10 km². It includes the district of Kastrup , in which the Copenhagen airport (Københavns Lufthavn, Kastrup) is located, as well as the bird protection island of Saltholm and the artificial island of Peberholm . The latter two islands do not belong to Hovedstadsområdet.
The Øresund connection begins on Amager as a tunnel under the Drogden fairway (Drogden tunnel ) to come back to the surface on the artificial island of Peberholm and continue to the actual Øresund bridge . Bus and train connections, as well as a metro, connect the municipality with the Danish capital.
To the west of Tårnby is the 25 km² area of Kalvebodstrand , which was heaped up between 1940 and 1945 . It is a breeding ground for countless species of birds .
Tårnby Municipality has a total population of 42,989 people (as of January 1st, 2020)
