Niki Dige Zimling (born April 19, 1985 in Tårnby ) is a former Danish football player and current football official .

During his active career he played in the top divisions of Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Meanwhile, he played in 24 games for the Danish national team and took part in the selection of the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine . Zimling has been head of sports at Kolding IF since the 2019/20 season .

Career as a player

Youth and advancement to the men's area

Zimling had started playing football at Fremad Amager before joining the youth department of Brøndby IF via stints at Tårnby BK , Amager Boldklub af 1970 and KB Copenhagen . There he began his professional career in 2003. In his first season as an active player, Zimling reached the UEFA Cup with Brøndby IF and on 6 November 2003 he made his European debut in the first leg in the second round against FC Schalke 04 when he came on for Jonas Kamper in the 84th minute . Zimling reached the round of 16 with the Copenhagen suburban club and was eliminated from FC Barcelona . The 2003/04 season ended Brøndby IF as runner-up.

In the 2004/05 season Zimling retired with Brøndby IF in qualifying for the UEFA Cup against FK Ventspils . In the same season he was with the club as a substitute champion and cup winner. At the end of August 2005 he moved to Esbjerg fB and again reached the cup final in 2006, which was lost 1-0 after extra time against second division Randers FC . In the league he finished sixth in the table with Esbjerg fB. In the following season Zimling scored ten goals in 30 league games and was seventh in the table, in the next season with Esbjerg fB he reached the cup final (2: 3 against Brøndby IF). In the league he played 16 games and scored three goals; Esbjerg finished seventh again. In the first half of the new season he played nine more times and then left the club.

In Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium (2009 to 2013)

In January 2009, Zimling moved to the Italian Serie A to Udinese Calcio . On March 22, 2009, he made his debut at 0-2 on matchday 29 in the away game against FC Genoa . He only made four appearances in the second half of the season. In the following season he was not a regular player and came to one use each in the Coppa Italia and the league. In the summer of 2010 he switched to the Eredivisie at NEC Nijmegen as a loan player . On August 7, 2010 he made his debut in a 1-0 win on matchday one in the home game against VVV Venlo . At NEC Nijmegen, the defensive midfielder appeared in 26 games and scored four goals. He was used once in the KNVB Beker .

He left the NEC Nijmegen after one season and was transferred from Udinese Calcio to the Pro League for Club Bruges for the 2011/12 season ; he received a four-year contract. In his first season he came in the championship on 29 appearances, in the play-off round on five appearances. He scored a goal. In the fight for the championship you had to let RSC Anderlecht go first. In the Europa League , Zimling made it to the round of 32 with FC Brugge, where they were eliminated against Hannover 96 . In the 2012/13 season he was used in seven games until the winter break, in which he scored one goal.

2013 to 2017: in Germany and the Netherlands

During the winter break of the 2012/13 season, Zimling moved to the Bundesliga and signed a contract with 1. FSV Mainz 05 until June 30, 2017. On February 2, 2013, he made his debut at 3-0 on the 20th matchday of the 2012/13 Bundesliga season in the home game against Bayern Munich , when he came on for Elkin Soto . On February 23, 2013, he scored his first Bundesliga goal with the 1-0 goal in the 5th minute at 1-1 on the 23rd matchday in the home game against VfL Wolfsburg . On September 1, 2014, Zimling was loaned to Ajax Amsterdam again in the Eredivisie until the end of the 2014/15 season with an option to buy . On 13 September 2014 he made his debut in a 2-1 win on matchday five against Heracles Almelo and four days later made his UEFA Champions League debut in a 1-1 matchday one against Paris Saint-Germain . At Ajax he was supposed to replace Daley Blind who had migrated to Manchester United , but could not prevail. Ajax Amsterdam did not use its purchase option.

Zimling returned to Mainz 05 during the 2015 summer break. In February 2016 he was awarded to the second division club FSV Frankfurt until the end of the season . On February 19, 2016, he suffered a ruptured inner ligament and cruciate ligament after 18 minutes in a 3-1 win on matchday 22 at FC St. Pauli and was out until the end of the season. The FSV Frankfurt rose at the end of the season in the 3rd division ; Zimling had played three league games.

After his return Zimling was in the squad of the second team of Mainz 05 and scored a goal in 21 missions.

Return to Denmark (since 2017)

At the end of June 2017 he moved to SønderjyskE in Denmark and signed a two-year contract. In his first season with the club from Haderslev Zimling missed the qualification for the international competition. At the end of the 2018/19 season he left the club.

National team

Zimling was used for several Danish junior national teams and took part with the Danish U-21 national team in the U-21 European Football Championship in 2006 . He made his first international match for the Danish national team on February 6, 2008 in a 2-1 win in the friendly against Slovenia in Nova Gorica . He came on in the 65th minute for Daniel Jensen . After a break of more than two years, he made his second international match on November 17, 2010, when he came on for Christian Poulsen in the 69th minute in a friendly in Aarhus in a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic . Zimling took part in the 2012 European Championship finals and played in all group matches against the Netherlands , Portugal and Germany . He missed qualifying for participation in the 2014 World Cup with the national team. His last international match was on March 5, 2014, when he lost 1-0 in a friendly against England in London .

For the 2019/20 season, Niki Zimling became the new sports director of the second division Kolding IF .
