Jan Heintze (born August 17, 1963 in Tårnby ) is a former Danish football player . He spent most of his career in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven and was a Danish international .

Career

society

Jan Heintze came to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 1982 . 1988 was his most successful year with PSV. After the Dutch championship in 1987, he won the European Champions Cup together with Hans van Breukelen and Ronald Koeman under coach Guus Hiddink . In the final at the Stuttgart Neckar Stadium , Benfica Lisbon was defeated 6: 5 on penalties. After 12 years at PSV Eindhoven there were no more prospects for Jan Heintze from the then coach Aad de Mos .

In 1994, after twelve years with PSV Eindhoven, he moved to the German Bundesliga and signed a contract with Bayer 05 Uerdingen . The fact that the Uerdingen hired Heintze at that time was considered a cracker and since Heintze did not want to give up his Dutch residence and the distance between his residence and Krefeld was only about 100 kilometers, he accepted the offer from Bayer 05 Uerdingen. After Uerdinger's relegation from the first division in 1996, he moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . In the Leverkusen jersey, he experienced numerous European Cup appearances.

In 1999 he moved back to PSV Eindhoven at the end of his career. Heintze became Dutch champions in 2000, 2001 and 2003. In 2003 he ended his career.

National team

On July 14, 1980, Heintze made his debut in a 2-1 win against the Netherlands for the Danish U-19 national team. He played 22 times for the U-19s and scored four goals. In 1981 he took part in the U-18 European Championship in Germany with the U-19 national team. He made his last game for the U-18s in the 3-0 win on February 23, 1982; against Portugal he scored two goals.

On May 5, 1982 Heintze played for the first time for the Danish U-21 national team ; in the 1-1 draw against Sweden he was called up in the starting eleven. Jan Heintze played 19 times for the U-21 national team without scoring a goal. He took part in the 1986 U-21 European Championship in 1986 . He made his last game for the U-21s on March 26, 1986 in the quarter-final second leg of the U-21 European Championship against England .

On April 29, 1987 Heintze made his debut in the 1-0 victory in the European Championship qualifier against Finland for the Danish national team . After qualifying, he was also nominated for the final tournament in Germany . The Danish team was eliminated after the preliminary round, with Heintze completing the entire season in all group games. On September 6, 1989, he scored his first international goal in a 1-1 test match at the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium against the Netherlands .

At the beginning of the qualification for the European Championship in 1992 , Heintze was there before a scandal brought the temporary end of his national team career. On May 1, 1991 in the qualifying game against Yugoslavia , he was relegated to the bench by coach Richard Møller Nielsen . He then left the hotel where the national team stayed and was banned by the Danish federation. He missed the Danes' title win at the European Football Championship in 1992. After the European Championship, Heintze made four appearances, but the game against Northern Ireland on November 18 was his last international match for the time being. He made his comeback on November 9, 1996 in a 1-0 win over France . He was also a fixture at the 1998 World Cup , when Denmark made it to the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by Brazil . Even when qualifying for the 2000 European Championship , the then Danish national coach Bo Johansson did not want to do without Heintze. After Denmark prevailed in the relegation against Israel , they were eliminated in the final tournament after the preliminary round without a point. Heintze was in all group games.

The new national coach Morten Olsen , former national team colleague of Heintze, also used him after the European Championship. So Heintze participated in the qualification for the 2002 World Cup , in which they prevailed as group first. At the World Cup itself, he played as team captain in the first two group matches against Uruguay and Senegal . After the tournament he resigned from the national team, which he had already announced before the tournament. Since his comeback in 1996 he has played in all 52 international matches for the national team, setting a national record.

Others

Since moving to Eindhoven in 1982, Heintze has lived in Nuenen in the Netherlands , where he also lived during his time in the German Bundesliga and after his career ended. He is married to a Dutch woman and has three children.

At the age of 22, Heintze founded a printing company in Eindhoven. For a time he owned several companies that mainly produced fan articles for PSV Eindhoven. As a businessman, he was also a sponsor of the club and was therefore allowed to linger in the sponsors' lounge when he was not playing. He also has an office in the Philips Stadion , the stadium of PSV Eindhoven. In 2014 it was announced that his companies were no longer part of his main field of activity and that he had switched to the real estate industry, while he remained connected to football as an agent in the sports insurance industry at Lloyd's of London .
