ZARA - civil courage and anti-racism work is an Austrian association. It was founded in 1999 with the aim of promoting civil courage and a racism-free society in Austria , as well as fighting all forms of racism . The association operates the advice center for victims and witnesses of racism as well as the advice center #GegenHassimNetz for those affected by online hatred and agitation.

Principles

For ZARA, racist discrimination applies when a person or group is disadvantaged in any way because of their skin color, language, appearance, religion, citizenship or origin. ZARA is committed to the principle of non-discrimination and undertakes to take appropriate steps and measures that enable practical implementation in the company. ZARA supports people confronted with racism and discriminated minorities at their request. Empowerment is one goal. Mutual exchange of information and experience with groups of representatives is intended to rule out any counter-working or side-by-side work as much as possible.

ZARA is committed to gender mainstreaming for equality between women and men. This means that the different conditions, situations and needs of women and men are systematically taken into account in the organization, conception, implementation and evaluation of all measures. All measures are designed to promote gender equality.

Work areas

The anti-racism work is based on advice , prevention and public awareness.

consultation

People who are confronted with racism receive information, support and (legal) advice. The association has been running the ZARA counseling center since January 2000 , where victims and witnesses of racism can report and receive advice free of charge from legally and socially trained employees.

Since autumn 2017, ZARA has also been operating the #GegenHassimNetz advice center , which supports users affected by online hatred and hate speech and cyber bullying in taking action against relevant content.

Prevention

Further training is a central component of prevention work in the area of anti-racism. ZARA Training non-profit GmbH was founded by ZARA in February 2014 and continues its prevention work. In Austria, ZARA Training offers training, workshops and projects in the areas of diversity, awareness-raising, anti-racism and civil courage. In this way, the GmbH supports the increase in competence in companies, schools, authorities and associations in a demand and practice-oriented manner.

Raising public awareness

ZARA wants to increase awareness of the problem of racism as well as hatred and agitation on the internet in Austria through public relations work and event-related campaigns. ZARA's most important publication is the annual Racism Report, which the association believes is the only qualitative data source on racist attacks and structures in Austria. ZARA also conducts media work through press releases and exchanges with journalists and advocates greater moral courage.

Information on the topic of anti-racism, current offers and activities as well as information on the work of ZARA are available on the ZARA website. In addition, a newsletter appears every two weeks.

On Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube, ZARA provides information about current social debates in the area of racism, discrimination, as well as hatred and agitation on the Internet.

Projects

In addition to the three pillars of anti-racism work, ZARA works with European partners on various projects:

V-Start - Victim Support Through Awareness Raising and neTworking (August 2017- July 2019)

  • The aim of the project is to raise the awareness of the victims of hatred for available support and to facilitate their access to the legal system.

Research - Report - Remove: Countering Cyber Hate Phenomena (2016–2017)

  • The aim of the project was to create a basic knowledge base about online hate, as well as to promote the analysis and the effective deletion of online hate. In the course of this, guidelines for internet providers and social media platforms were developed.

financing

The Zara association is largely financed from public subsidies. In 2016, over 60% of the operating performance was financed by public subsidies, the share of the municipality of Vienna in the subsidies was over 35%. About 20% of the operating performance was covered from donations, membership fees and charity, while sales generated just under 4% of the operating performance.

Due to the close relationship with the municipality of Vienna, the association is regularly audited by the city audit office, most recently in 2017 the implementation of recommendations of the audit office was checked.
