The San Mamés station is a tunnel station with a bus station above it in the Basque city of Bilbao . It serves as a connection point for numerous long-distance bus lines with the two lines of the Bilbao Metro , lines C-1 and C-2 of the Bilbao S-Bahn and the Bilbao tram . The train station is located in the Garellano district in the Basurto-Zorroza district . In addition to its function as a transfer station, the station also serves to connect the football stadium of the Athletic Club de Bilbao . The train station was first put into operation in 1995 as a subway station and was connected to the S-Bahn in 2000 . The city administration had decided to build an S-Bahn tunnel in order to banish the tracks from the cityscape through an underground route and to be able to use the areas for other purposes.
