The Bilbao tram is operated by the Basque railway company EuskoTren under the name Euskotren Tranbia. On May 27, 1999, work began on the construction of the tram that serves one line. It is the successor to an old Tranvía de Bilbo tram network that existed from 1872 to 1964.

history

Historic vehicle in the Basque Railway Museum , Azpeitia

The first tram in Bilbao, Tranvía de Bilbo , was running as early as 1872. The last line was discontinued in 1964. But the prevalent traffic problems led to a rethink. On December 18, 2002, the first 4.5 km long section of the new tram went into operation to complement the Bilbao metro . Since then, three short extensions, each a few hundred meters long, have followed. The route runs in the city center along the ria of the Nervion River and connects two metro stations and three train stations with the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao . Most of the route consists of a grass track separated from motorized individual traffic . It is mostly double-track , but only single-track in the eastern third.

Rolling stock

Three -part articulated railcars of the Urbos 1 type from the Basque company CAF were selected to operate the line .
