Network plan

The Tranvía Tenerife is the only tram and also the only rail-bound means of transport in the Canary Islands on the island of Tenerife . The train connects Santa Cruz de Tenerife with San Cristóbal de La Laguna and overcomes a difference in altitude of almost 600 meters.

Current

The official commissioning took place - after several months of trial operation - on June 2, 2007. The standard-gauge line runs from Santa Cruz to La Laguna. It is 12.5 kilometers long and the travel time is 37 minutes. 20 new Alstom Citadis railcars were delivered by the manufacturer Alstom, Barcelona, and transport up to 44,000 people a day on the double-track line. The maximum speed of the trains is given as 70 km / h, a travel speed of 20 km / h is assumed.

The first tram line is number 1. An extension to Los Rodeos Airport , another downtown route and a line along the sea are planned - but without a fixed schedule. Line 2 has been running on the three-kilometer route from La Cuesta to Tíncer since May 30, 2009 . For this purpose, six new railcars were procured from Alstom.

Line 2 is to be extended from Tíncer by 2.5 kilometers and five stops in a south-westerly direction to La Gallega.

history

There was already a tram on Tenerife from 1901 to 1951. It drove from April 1, 1901 from Santa Cruz to San Cristóbal de La Laguna and from July 27, 1904 to Tacoronte and had seven more stations than the new building. On the sides of the road, separated by trees, you can still see traces of track that were concreted over in downtown Santa Cruz.

Álvaro Domínguez Rodríguez, born in La Laguna in 1928, is one of the last living employees of the old tram and was one of the first drivers of the new tram.

Tickets

The tram company Metropolitano de Tenerife has a price association with the bus company Titsa (Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife), which operates almost all bus routes on the island of Tenerife. Tickets of Titsa and tickets of Metropolitano de Tenerife also apply when transferring from bus to tram and vice versa. In contrast to the buses, no tickets are sold on the tram ( Tranvia ) trains . There are ticket machines at all stops. Tickets can also be purchased in the two information pavilions, which are located at the terminus of Line 1. Within the Área metropolitana de Santa Cruz de Tenerife / La Laguna , a single price applies for the guaguas (buses) of Titsa and the “Tranvía” (trams) of the Metropolitano de Tenerife , i.e. In other words, regardless of how far the passenger travels within this zone, regardless of whether they change or not, they always pay the same price. This price is z. Z. (May 2012) for the most popular form of payment, the multiple ticket Bonobus or Bonovia, € 1.05. The fare for students at the University of La Laguna is 0.80 € (2012).
