Rail transport in Djibouti
The rail traffic in Djibouti is today (in 2009) from the eastern segment of the Ethio-Djibouti Railways . In addition, there were other railway lines that were discontinued.
Meter gauge network
- This eastern segment of the Djibouti- Addis Ababa railway from Djibouti (city) to the Ethiopian border went into operation in 1901. It is 108 km long and was built in meter gauge.
- Subsequently, a connecting railway for the port of Djibouti was opened in 1917 . Only goods traffic takes place here.
- Since 1929, the Addis Ababa – Djibouti railway was also connected to a 172 km long route to Hargeysa in British Somaliland, only used by the British military . It was abandoned after the victory over the Italian army in Italian East Africa in 1943.
600 mm routes
In 1932, the Compagnie des Salins du Midi et des Salines de Djibouti began operating a 600 mm narrow-gauge railway for internal purposes in their salt pans . Passenger traffic did not take place here. The time of the closure is not known.
