Rail transport in Chad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There is no rail transport in Chad and has never taken place.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a German company in Cameroon began surveying a railway line to Chad and carried out research trips in 1902/03 and 1904.

During the existence of the French Community , around 1958 there were plans for a railway line of around 870 km from Bangui ( Central African Republic ) to Fort Lamy (today: N'Djamena ) in Chad . With the dissolution of the French community, this project was abandoned.

There are currently plans to build two railway lines with a total length of approx. 1,350 km in standard gauge . In 2011, Chad and China Civil Engineering Construction signed a contract worth 7 billion US dollars. The network should primarily serve freight traffic, but passenger traffic should also take place. A line is to run from N'Djamena to Moundou and Koutéré on the border with Cameroon (528 km). The closest connection option there, the Duala – Nkongsamba railway line, has been closed except for a remainder of 29 km. A second railway line is to run from N'Djamena via Abéché and Adré to the border of Sudan (836 km). The track will in Nyala , the railway Khartoum Nyala reach. Speeds of up to 120 km / h should be possible. Construction work should start in February 2012. The vehicle material is to be delivered from China. There are different gauges in both Cameroon ( meter gauge ) and Sudan ( Cape gauge) .
