Construction of the Khartoum – Nyala railway began in the winter of 1906/07 as a southern extension of the Khartoum – Wadi Halfa railway in Sudan .

Before the First World War

The Rhodes Colossus (1892), cartoon on the Cape-Cairo plan

The aim was to improve the development of central Sudan . The Cape Gauge , which is now the standard in Sudan, was chosen as the gauge . In 1912, 700 km to El Obeid were completed. Two large bridges over the Nile had to be built in the course of the route: One in Khartoum over the Blue Nile - here the river is more than 500 m wide - and the Kusti railway bridge near the city of Kusti over the White Nile - here is the river almost 5 km wide at high tide. The first bridge had a lift bridge element , the latter a swivel bridge segment so as not to obstruct ship traffic.

Extensive projects were connected with this route: A connection to the Djibouti – Adis Ababa railway and on to British Somaliland , Chad or the Uganda Railway as a section of the Cape Town – Cairo railway connection, which has not yet been built . The British government and the government of Sudan had already obtained a concession from Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia for the latter project on May 15, 1902 , in order to be able to run the route across Ethiopian territory. But none of this came about after the outbreak of the First World War .

Later renewals

In 1926, in Sennar , the railway junction Haija Sennar connected. She opened up a cotton growing area . In 2005 this line was closed. 1952 to 1959, also in Sennar, an approx. 260 km long route was connected to Er Roseires , which owes its creation primarily to the construction of the dam of Roseires , which dammed the Blue Nile here .

1956 to 1959 the line to El Obeid was extended to Nyala , this extension not starting in El Obeid, but 60 km southeast of the then end point of the line in Aradeib Junction . From 1959 to 1962, the Babanusa – Wau railway line was added to this extension . Today, the routes are primarily important for the transport of petroleum products . It is not known whether the route to its western end point, Nyala, is still passable after the war of civil secession in South Sudan .
