The Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto , SA (STCP) is a transport company that operates the majority of the Portuens bus network and the entire tram network. The SCTP owns more than 600 buses, mostly painted blue and white, and serves around 70 lines in Porto and the surrounding area.

Trams

The rise and fall of the Porto tram network

Porto was the first city in Portugal to introduce electric tram transport . The first line started operating as early as 1895 (Lisbon: 1901). In 1950, the Porto tram network reached its greatest extent with a route length of 182 kilometers.

Since the 1960s, more and more tram lines have been replaced by buses. By 2007, the tram network had shrunk to two small lines, mainly used by tourists. The trolleybus lines have also been converted to diesel buses .

Instead of the tram, the Porto Metro now transports the high-demand and highly frequented public transport axes in Porto.

Expansion of the tram network from 2007

In recent times the STCP is expanding its tram network again. On September 22, 2007, the new line 22 was officially put into operation. For the new line, completely new tracks were laid as part of the old town redevelopment of Porto. This means that three tram lines are now operating in Porto again:

  • 1 (Infante - Passeio Alegre, along the Douro bank)
  • 18 (Massarelos - Carmo)
  • 22 (ring traffic Batalha - Carmo - Batalha).

However, the tram lines are only integrated into the urban transport network for season ticket holders, day tickets for the Porto Metro are not valid. The traffic is more intended for tourists, which also explains the half-hourly service. Passengers can purchase single trips for € 3 and 2-day tickets for € 10 (children € 5). Only 2-day tickets can be purchased in advance (as of February 2018).

All lines are operated with old but well-preserved tram cars. The Museu do Carro Eléctrico , the tram museum of Porto, which is located next to the depot, is responsible for maintenance and operation . In the tram museum, in addition to tram cars from different eras, work vehicles and an O-bus can be viewed, and the converter plant can be visited in a further section. The tram museum can also be used as an event location . The Tram Museum can be reached by trams 1 and 18, get off at Massarelos.
