The Tranvía de Bilbo was the first tram in the Vizcaya Province in what is now the Basque Country Autonomous Community in Spain .

history

The tram in Bilbao , originally designed as a horse-drawn tram , opened in 1872, with the first route going to Las Arenas. In 1896 the system was expanded and the horse- drawn train was replaced by a tram motorcar with a diesel engine that generated electricity for an electric motor via a generator . In 1920 the now electrified tram network was 109 kilometers long and consisted of twelve lines . In 1964 the tram was finally replaced by trolleybuses .

today

After the first tram was shut down, it took almost four decades before construction work on a new tram officially began in May 1999. The first new route was opened on December 18, 2002 with the Atxuri-Uribitarte line, serving fourteen stops . Today's tram networks in Bilbao and Vitória are operated under the name EuskoTran (a combination of EuskoTren and tranbia / tranvía, the Basque or Spanish name for tram).
