The Reutherberg tunnel is a 1256 meter long single-tube road tunnel on federal highway 294 near Wolfach . It is dominated by about 300 meters of overburden.

The tunnel is part of the Wolfach bypass, which also has a bridge over the Kinzig at the east and west portal of the tunnel. This section of the B 294 is a motor road . Around 10,000 vehicles pass through the tunnel every day, 17% of them trucks.

The tube was built using blasting and opened in 1993.

safety

The tunnel has complete video surveillance , emergency walkways on both sides, each one meter wide, two holding bays on both sides and a ventilation system at the apex of the tunnel, which is integrated in a holding bay ( 48 ° 17 ′ 38 ″  N , 8 ° 13 ′ 49.7 ″  O ) . Due to the bad mark in the ADAC tunnel test 2008 , the tube was renovated from 2013 to 2014 and retrofitted with a parallel rescue tunnel with eight cross-passages to the tunnel.

history

Before the tunnel was opened, federal highway 294 ran through the historic town of Wolfach. Especially at the city gate and at the intersection at the city bridge, there were often traffic jams. Thus, the city passage had become an obstacle. The plan for a bypass came into effect. This required the construction of two Kinzig bridges (140 and 160 meters in length) and the Reutherberg tunnel through the Reutherberg mountain spur. This new section of the B 294, which is around one kilometer shorter than the old one through the city, was opened in 1993 with pedestrian tours.
