The Gernsbach tunnel is a 1527 m long road tunnel in which the B 462 passes under the city center of Gernsbach in the northern Black Forest . The two-lane two-way traffic tunnel runs in a north-south direction parallel to the Murg River , partly below its water level. The northern tunnel portal is at the entrance to Gernsbach at the level of the Glatfelter paper mill , the southern portal is at the football field below Schünsch . In the course there are two emergency bays on both sides and an emergency exit slightly south of the center of the tunnel, which leads up a staircase to the tunnel operations building in Gernsbacher Blumenweg.

construction

The tunnel was built from 1992 to 1997, opening was on October 6, 1997. Of the total length, 1230 m were constructed using mining methods ( New Austrian Tunneling Method ) and blasting , almost 300 m using the cut- and- cover method. There is also a total of almost 300 m of trough section at the tunnel entrances.

Refurbishment and retrofitting

On January 13, 2004, during a flood of the Murg, the tunnel was flooded up to 2.40 m deep by the water flowing into the north portal and had to be closed for weeks for renovation work.

In January 2007 the Karlsruhe Regional Council announced that a comprehensive retrofitting of the tunnel was planned. Tunnel ventilation, lighting, safety and communication facilities as well as energy supply and emergency exits are to be supplemented or improved. In the same year, the deficiencies to be eliminated were also made public during the ADAC tunnel test. Deficits in escape and rescue routes, ventilation and emergency management as well as oncoming traffic and the large proportion of trucks were criticized. After several delays, from October 1, 2012 to April 28, 2013, the safety technology was renewed in a first construction phase of the retrofitting. The tunnel was closed for this purpose. In September 2019, the construction of four additional escape staircases, scheduled for a good 18 months, began, for which only short-term tunnel closures are planned.
