Glatfelter paper mill in Gernsbach

The Glatfelter Gernsbach GmbH is a specialty paper manufacturer in Gernsbach . The former paper mill Schoeller & Hoesch GmbH & Co. KG was taken over in 1998 by the PH Glatfelter Company , under whose name it has operated since 2007.

history

Felix Heinrich Schoeller (1821–1893), son of the Düren paper manufacturer Heinrich August Schoeller on Schoellershammer , and Georg Schultz founded the cellulose factory "Schultz & Cie" in 1881 on the site of a former grinding mill . A company health insurance fund was founded as early as 1884. Due to increasing complaints from residents about odor nuisance and increasing competitive pressure, pulp production was stopped in 1902 . Instead, two paper machines were installed. In 1904 the production of tissue and cigarette paper began . After Hugo Hoesch (1859–1912) from the Rhenish industrial family Hoesch joined the company as plant manager, it was renamed “Seiden- und Zigarettenpapierfabrik Schoeller & Hoesch GmbH” in 1905. The specialization in dispute papers , which soon became an essential part of the business, proved to be successful . In 1907 the company pension scheme was founded.

Felix Hoesch (1888–1956), the son of Hugo Hoesch (1859–1912), took over the commercial management of the company from his father in 1911. His brother Udo Hoesch also joined the company in 1914 and was the technical manager in the years to come. Both were also involved as limited partners with a contribution of 300,000 marks each to the chemical factory Pott & Co. , based in Dresden . The first company apartments were built near the Gernsbach factory in 1919 and made available to the foremen and shift supervisors. In the course of time this settlement was expanded.

In 1920 Schoeller & Hoesch founded the Gizeh cigarette paper processing company , today Gizeh Raucherbedarf , which initially produced in Cologne and since the 1940s in Bergneustadt . The sixth paper machine in Gernsbach was installed in 1922. In order to be able to satisfy the increasing demand for capacitor paper, two more paper machines were put into operation in 1928. At that time, 800 employees produced 6300 tons of paper per year.

A special paper machine for the production of very thin capacitor paper was set up in 1935. The new construction of a steam boiler house, begun in 1932, was completed in 1937 and in 1938 one of the most modern equipment halls in Europe was completed and put into operation.

The damage of the Second World War and the partial dismantling by the French had been repaired by 1952. At that time, eight paper machines were already running again. In 1954 a social building was built with a dining room, catering, relaxation room, shower and bath rooms. In 1958 an administration building was completed. In 1955 a turnover of approx. 32 million DM was achieved with approx. 800 employees and Schoeller & Hoesch began with the production of overlay papers . In 1965, the first attempts to manufacture tea bag paper followed. Production for this began in 1973. Felix Hoesch's son, Klaus Hoesch, joined the company. After the early death of his father, he took over the commercial management of the company.

On January 1, 1949, Gert Hoesch joined the company as another managing partner from the family. His main task was human resources. He retired on December 31, 1981. Also from the circle of the family, Jochen Hoesch joined the company on January 1, 1957 as managing partner for technology and production. He left in late 1975. Christoph Sieber-Rilke became commercial director in 1975. As a result of economic difficulties, the company switched to four-shift drive-through operation in 1977. Four paper machines were shut down and the workforce was reduced from 724 to 545 people. The production of capacitor paper was completely stopped in 1978. The production of cigarette and printing papers , on the other hand, was expanded.

With the installation of a metallizer and a painting machine , the production of metallized foils and papers began in 1979 . In 1981, Eckart Küssner became the technical director, employed 630 people, and had a turnover of around DM 100 million. In 1990, a specialty pulp factory was purchased in the Philippines . Here was Abacazellstoff produced. In 1993 this pulp mill was further expanded.

In 1991 a new inclined wire paper machine and hall for the production of long fiber papers followed . This created 50 new jobs. In 1992 the construction of a new plant in Wisches ( Alsace ) for the production of synthetic fiber fleece in the meltblown process was completed. In 1995 there was a partial takeover (50%) of Papeteries de Cascadec in Brittany , a manufacturer of long fiber papers. In 1997 Schoeller & Hoesch was taken over by an investment company of Deutsche Bank . Gerhard Federer became managing director. In 1998, the complete takeover of Papeteries de Cascadec and the sale to the US American PH Glatfelter Company took place. In 1998 a group turnover of over 300 million DM was achieved, 677 people were employed in Gernsbach and 253 in the remaining branches. More than 42,000 tons of paper were produced each year. In 2000 Werner Ruckenbrod became managing director. The Scottish group Empteezy Ltd. took over the plant in Wisches in 2003, which has since operated under the name Schoeller Industries . The production of cigarette and printing papers was discontinued in 2004.

In 2006 Werner Ruckenbrod left the company and Martin Rapp became the new managing director. 574 people were employed at the Gernsbach location, 128 at the Scaër location and 82 in the Philippines. In 2007 the company name Schoeller & Hoesch was deleted. On April 1, 2007, the US owner Glatfelter had the traditional German name replaced by his company name and logo. Since August 1, 2014, the company name has been Glatfelter Gernsbach GmbH (Mannheim District Court HRB 530244).
