history
The company was founded in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania in 1864 by Philip H. Glatfelter. He then bought a paper mill for around $ 14,000 and began production in July 1864 under the name Spring Forge Mill . In the decades that followed, the company, whose main product was newsprint , grew steadily, increasing daily paper production from 1,500 pounds a day in 1864 to over 100,000 pounds in 1895.
The company was officially registered in 1906 as the PH Glatfelter Company. The company founder Philip H. Glatfelter died the following year and William Glatfelter became Glatfelter's new president. He continued to expand the company and founded the Glatfelter Wood Pulp Company in 1918 to meet the increasing demand for wood.
In January 1998, Glatfelter acquired the Schoeller & Hoesch paper mill in Gernsbach in Baden-Württemberg for around 160 million US dollars from Deutsche Beteiligungs AG .
In April 2013, Glatfelter acquired Dresden Papier GmbH for around 160 million euros from Fortress Paper Ltd. In 2018, the specialty papers business was sold to a company owned by the financial investor Lindsay Goldberg .
