The Pörzberg tunnel is a single-tube road tunnel on federal highway 90 in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district . It serves as a bypass around the Rudolstadt district of Schaala , whose narrow passage only allows one-way traffic with traffic lights.

In the years after German reunification, traffic increased significantly, so that Schaala had to deal with constant heavy goods traffic. The narrow valley location of the Schaalbach was one of the decisive factors for the decision to conduct traffic underground. Last but not least, a specially founded citizens' initiative campaigned for a tunnel solution from 1999. The official start of construction began on July 16, 2007. On December 21, 2010, after a delay of over a year, it was opened to traffic as part of a ceremony.

With a length of 1,145 meters, it is the longest state road tunnel in the Free State of Thuringia . The Pörzberg covers it with a maximum of 85 meters. A foam extinguishing system, used for the first time in Germany, was installed so that dangerous goods transporters can also pass through this tunnel. The technical equipment also includes an electronic traffic control system, modern ventilation and tunnel radio. 3 rescue tunnels at a distance of around 300 meters complement the safety standards. During the construction phase 130,000 tons of rock were broken out and 100 tons of explosives were used by an Austrian tunneling company.
