The Michaelstunnel is a road tunnel in Baden-Baden . It is one of the 10 longest road tunnels in Germany .

It is part of the B 500 , which serves as the western bypass of the city center. The tunnel has only one tube in which there is one lane in each direction in oncoming traffic. The Michaelstunnel has a length of 2,544 meters and is therefore the second longest road tunnel in Baden-Württemberg after the Saukopftunnel . It was built between 1986 and 1989 to relieve the city center and named after Michael Stourdza , Moldovan prince and honorary citizen of Baden-Baden. The tunnel is used by around 20,000 vehicles every day. In 2011 the Michaelstunnel was closed for one year in order to retrofit it structurally and operationally and to increase safety. This had become necessary due to increased safety standards for road tunnels. When the construction work was completed, it was opened to traffic again on August 1, 2012.
